About The Position

Rapides Regional Medical Center is hiring a PRN Nurse Extern for Telemetry Renal. The Nurse Extern is a valued member of the nursing team who gains hands-on experience with the scope of the Registered Nurse role while supporting safe, compassionate patient care. The position helps nursing students build skills and confidence as they progress through their nursing program.

The role provides essential patient care, assists with basic nursing tasks, documents care, communicates with the nursing team, and supports patients and families. The Nurse Extern also maintains safe, clean patient areas and participates in learning and career development activities with a supervisor or preceptor.

Rapides Regional Medical Center is a 350+ bed hospital and emergency room in Alexandria, Louisiana, offering services from cancer care to wound care and staffing physicians across more than 30 medical specialties.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing (ADN or BSN) program.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.

• Preferred candidate has completed foundation, fundamentals, or Med Surg I clinical.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living, check vital signs, support mobility, and help ensure comfort and hygiene.
• Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other basic procedures as experience and competency develop.
• Document care accurately and communicate timely updates to the nursing team.
• Help patients and families understand care plans and provide guidance related to health and recovery.
• Maintain clean, safe, and organized patient areas by following infection prevention practices and managing equipment.
• Participate in learning opportunities, share ideas for improving care, and work with a supervisor or preceptor to develop a personal career development plan.
