About The Position

The Nurse Extern is a valued member of the nursing team who gains hands-on experience while exploring the scope of the Registered Nurse role. The position supports safe, compassionate patient care and helps the extern build skills and confidence for more advanced responsibilities while progressing through an accredited nursing program. The role includes a scheduling requirement of one 12-hour shift per week or four 12-hour shifts per month.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in an accredited ADN or BSN program.
• Must have completed Foundations, Fundamentals, or Med Surg I.
• Must obtain Basic Cardiac Life Support within 30 days of employment start date.
• Professional communication skills.
• Meet scheduling requirements of one 12-hour shift per week or four 12-hour shifts per month.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living, check vital signs, support mobility, and help ensure comfort and hygiene.
• Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other basic procedures as experience and competency develop.
• Document care accurately and communicate timely updates to the nursing team.
• Help patients and families understand care plans and offer guidance related to health and recovery.
• Maintain clean and safe patient areas by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and keeping the environment organized.
• Participate in learning opportunities, share ideas to improve care, and work with a supervisor or preceptor on a personal career development plan.
