Digital Model Based Testing NG Fellow 1

Northrop Grumman•San Diego, CA
•$189,400 - $328,900•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is hiring a Northrop Grumman Fellow 1 for its Test and Evaluation Center of Technical Excellence (CoTE). The position may be based in San Diego or Palmdale, California, or Melbourne, Florida, and is full-time and on-site, with no remote, hybrid, or telework option. Relocation assistance may be available. Travel is listed as 10% of the time. The Fellow 1 is the senior technical expert for advancing digital model based testing across Test and Evaluation and the complete system life cycle. The role keeps mission needs central to engineering decisions, champions systems thinking and technical rigor, and promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration in a digital ecosystem. It provides technical leadership and independent engineering insight in support of Northrop Grumman's long-range strategy for rapid capability development and warfighter needs. The work includes using high-fidelity modeling and simulation to optimize and reduce physical testing, shorten testing duration, and increase confidence in vehicle performance while managing uncertainty. The role advises program leadership and influences technical direction, supports multiple programs and research and development initiatives, develops the digital model based testing vision and integration roadmap, and represents the discipline to senior internal and external leaders. It also supports engagement with the U.S. Department of War test and evaluation community, advances live, virtual, and constructive testing capabilities, and develops and mentors engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline and 16 years of experience across numerous test engineering disciplines and life-cycle phases; or a Master of Science in a STEM discipline and 14 years of experience across numerous T&E disciplines and life-cycle phases; or a Ph.D. in a STEM discipline and 12 years of experience across numerous test engineering disciplines and life-cycle phases.
  • Subject matter expertise in third-generation modeling and simulation architecture for partial test substitution, implementation, and analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute MBT&E within a modern digital engineering ecosystem, integrating models, data, analyses, and engineering artifacts to support technically sound, lifecycle-informed decisions.
  • Aerospace industry experience as a technical specialist and thought leader, with demonstrated leadership, participation in professional societies, and/or publications in T&E, Systems Engineering, Mission Engineering, Digital Thread, Digital Engineering, Digital Technology, and/or Digital Transformation.
  • Demonstrated experience working with customers and senior leadership.
  • Active U.S. Government Secret clearance, with a background investigation within the past six years or enrollment in Continuous Evaluation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance within a reasonable amount of time as determined by business needs.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain U.S. Government Top Secret clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a large and diverse group, establish clear expectations, inspire commitment, build teams, value diversity, and put people first.
  • Strong business acumen and a clearly demonstrated commitment to open communication and customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in achieving results through understanding and management of internal processes and customer and supplier relationships.
  • Exceptional ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness.
  • A network of outside technical contacts within industry, relationships with outside experts in the discipline, and/or a technical working relationship with a university.
  • Willingness to travel domestically; the position may require domestic travel under 15%.

Responsibilities

  • Model and simulate physics-based systems.
  • Convert physics-based models into reduced-order or surrogate models that enable faster-than-real-time response.
  • Perform model verification, validation, and certification.
  • Apply numerical optimization and assess mathematical modeling stability.
  • Use testing design of experiments and numerical database point determination techniques.
  • Generate and execute physics-based Digital Twins.
  • Determine how models of internal and external discipline components affect overall system performance.
  • Quantify uncertainty in model and test data interactions.
  • Analyze nonlinear mathematical term interactions and their consequences for model prediction quality.
  • Define and lead analytical efforts supporting trade studies, tactics and techniques, and assessment of performance requirements, including combined uncertainty.
  • Assess cost, schedule, and risk associated with Digital Twin implementations.
  • Advise program leadership and influence technical direction in alignment with program and sector AOP/LRSP objectives.
  • Present modeling outputs and their strategic importance to senior internal and external leadership.
  • Engage and support the U.S. Department of War T&E community to facilitate engagements or partnerships that may lead to future business capture opportunities.
  • Support multiple programs, IRAD/CRAD projects, and sector initiatives in leadership or advisory roles, including advancing new technologies through design, integration, testing, and production.
  • Develop and maintain the NGAS digital model based testing vision and a roadmap for NG integration of internal and supplier technologies.
  • Participate in and occasionally lead IRTs.
  • Develop and mentor the next generation of engineers, including developing training material.
  • Act as a thought leader for the MBT&E community and work across sectors as required.
  • Advise multiple levels of management on technical research, applications, and long-range business planning.
