About The Position

The Athletic is accepting applications for its Leon H. Carter newsroom internship for the fall of 2026. The NHL intern will play a key role in the hockey department, writing and reporting on stories across the leagueâs 32 teams. This is a 12-week program running from September to December 2026. The intern will be embedded within the NHL departmentâs News, Enterprise and Trending team, which will expose the intern to quick-turn assignments as well as deep-dive projects exploring some of the most compelling storylines in hockey. The mission of The Athleticâs internship program is to attract and develop the industryâs next stars. The intern will help shape our most informative hockey coverage while also helping to advance our goal to be the top destination for sports news around the world. This is a remote internship that may require some travel to Chicago and/or New York City. Candidates in New York City have the option of working on-site in the New York City office. The rate of pay for this role is $20 USD per hour. The application deadline is May 1, 2026.

Requirements

Undergraduate students who are ideally in their junior year, senior year, or a recent graduate.
Ability to work a 30â40 hour work week, including nights and weekends.
A journalism background and an understanding of how newsrooms operate.
The ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Flexibility: ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment where needs and priorities can change quickly.
Deep knowledge of and passion for hockey.

Responsibilities

Write NHL breaking news stories.
Pitch, report, write and fact-check hockey stories.
Follow The Athleticâs editorial standards.
Attend regular editorial meetings and collaborate with NHL editors and reporters on ideas and assignments.
Edit and publish hockey stories.
