NG, NGLs, and Specialties Optimization Modeling & Technology Manager

Marathon Petroleum Corporation•Denver, CO
•$162,700 - $243,800

About The Position

The NG, NGLs, and Specialties Optimization Modeling & Technology Manager leads the development, implementation, and ongoing advancement of digital models and decision-support tools for integrated optimization across the natural gas and NGL value chain. Based in Planning & Optimization, the role connects Commercial, Trading, Operations, Scheduling, Logistics, Finance, Digital/IT, and other stakeholders to translate business decisions, plant capabilities, operating constraints, and value drivers into technically sound optimization solutions. The manager serves as the primary business and technical liaison among NG and NGL processing stakeholders, IT teams, and third-party software providers. The role ensures models represent plant and network processes, data, economics, contracts, and operational constraints; establishes model governance and performance standards; and drives adoption, support, training, and continuous improvement. Model recommendations must be feasible, explainable, and capable of delivering measurable enterprise value. The position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, or potentially another technical field with substantial relevant experience, and at least 10 years of relevant experience. It is a regular, full-time position with a stated salary range of $162,700 to $243,800. The primary location is Denver, Colorado, with additional locations in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania; Findlay, Ohio; Houston, Texas; and San Antonio, Texas. Relocation assistance may be available depending on the candidate's location and position requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development, implementation, and lifecycle management of NG and NGL optimization models, digital tools, and decision-support applications for planning from long-range strategy through near-term execution.
  • Translate plant configurations, process relationships, operating limits, product recoveries, quality requirements, commercial terms, logistics constraints, and market economics into functional and technical model requirements.
  • Partner with Digital/IT, data and architecture teams, and third-party software providers on solution design, data integration, testing, security, deployment, support, and enhancements while retaining business ownership of model logic and outcomes.
  • Direct model configuration, calibration, validation, and performance monitoring to ensure recommendations accurately reflect asset capabilities and produce feasible, explainable, economically sound results across plants, regions, and the enterprise value chain.
  • Coordinate digital-tool priorities and delivery across Planning & Optimization, Commercial, Trading, Operations, Scheduling, Logistics, Finance, Digital/IT, and other business partners.
  • Partner with IT to manage project scope, resources, risks, milestones, vendor performance, and status reporting for assigned digital initiatives.
  • Own business acceptance and operational readiness, including test-case development, user acceptance testing, recommendation backcasting and validation, defect resolution, production support, and transition to sustainable business and IT support models.
  • Develop training, procedures, support playbooks, and technical guidance for business users and support teams.
  • Coach team members and stakeholders in model interpretation, scenario development, appropriate use of recommendations, and continuous improvement of planning processes.
  • Evaluate emerging optimization methods, solvers, analytics, forecasting capabilities, and digital technologies, and recommend enhancements to improve scalability, reliability, transparency, decision speed, and value realization.
  • Define and monitor measures for model accuracy, reliability, adoption, decision latency, plan-versus-actual performance, and realized value.
  • Communicate results, limitations, risks, and recommended actions to leadership and key stakeholders.
