Neutron Fluence Analyst Intern - Summer 2027

Idaho National Laboratory•Idaho Falls, ID
•Onsite

About The Position

The Neutron Fluence Analyst Intern will use results from stochastic neutronics modeling at the Advanced Test Reactor to correlate calculated neutron fluence in the beryllium neutron reflector with observed age-related effects, such as cracking. The work will help characterize aging in reflector regions, particularly locations that cannot be inspected. Results of past inspections will be available as benchmarks. The team works onsite at the Advanced Test Reactor campus on a 4x10 schedule. Internship start date and duration vary based on the project and student availability. Course credit may be available.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an ABET-accredited college or university, studying Computer Science, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related STEM field.
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
  • Be authorized to work in the U.S., including through CPT or OPT.
  • Provide a current resume or CV.
  • Provide unofficial transcripts, including current and completed degree programs.
  • Provide a current class schedule and number of credits.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as Python, Bash, or Java.
  • Foundational understanding of nuclear science concepts, including neutron flux, fluence, and scattering.
  • Familiarity with materials science principles, including radiation-induced embrittlement.

Responsibilities

  • Use stochastic neutronics modeling results from the Advanced Test Reactor to correlate neutron fluence in the beryllium neutron reflector with observed aging effects such as cracking.
  • Help characterize aging in reflector regions, especially areas that cannot be inspected.
  • Use observed aging effects from past inspections as benchmarks.

Benefits

  • May be eligible for course credit.
