The paid Music Therapy Intern program provides intensive working experience in music therapy. The program emphasizes cultural awareness and issues related to equity and diversity, and supports students through an equity lens, including students who reflect the diversity of the patients and families served. Interns develop and provide music therapy interventions under the supervision of a Board Certified Music Therapist at Children’s Minnesota. Music therapy is an evidence-based allied health profession that applies music to individualized non-musical goals, which may be physical, cognitive, emotional, or social. Patients receive individual, group, or family music therapy sessions. By the end of the internship, interns are expected to meet all AMTA-designated competencies required to sit for board certification. The program develops skills in music foundations, clinical foundations, and music therapy practice, including assessment, treatment planning and implementation, evaluation, documentation, professional ethics, collaboration, supervision, administration, and research methods.
