The paid music therapy internship at Children’s Minnesota provides intensive working experience in music therapy. The program emphasizes cultural awareness and issues related to equity and diversity, and supports students in working from an equity lens. Interns develop and provide music therapy interventions under the supervision of a Board Certified Music Therapist. Music therapy uses clinical applications of music to address individualized non-musical goals that may be physical, cognitive, emotional, or social. Patients receive individual, group, or family sessions. Interns participate in clinical supervision with board-certified music therapists and other healthcare professionals; observe, co-lead, and lead sessions; and eventually manage their own schedule and caseload during the leadership portion of the internship. By the end of the internship, interns are expected to meet all AMTA-designated competencies required to sit for board certification.
