About The Position

Apple Inc. is hiring a Module Design Engineer in San Diego, California, to develop advanced haptic solutions for Apple products, including iPhone and Apple Watch. The role leads the design, development, and validation of next-generation haptic actuators and experiences, with end-to-end responsibility for mechanical design and integration from concept through production. The engineer develops concepts, prototypes and evaluates ideas, designs mechanical components and assemblies, creates specifications and drawings, and analyzes static and dynamic structures. The role also supports manufacturing and assembly process development with external vendors, validates designs through iterations, conducts failure analysis and design of experiments to address root causes, and generates intellectual property. The engineer works with Industrial Design, System Engineering, manufacturing, operations, and other cross-functional teams to meet functional, aesthetic, and manufacturability goals. Responsibilities include communicating with teams and management, managing priorities against schedules, and leading design reviews and documentation releases. International travel of 20% is required. The position is 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience or education using Siemens NX, CATIA, or SolidWorks to draft 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience or education using statistical process analysis methods with Python or MATLAB to assess manufactured results against design requirements.
  • Experience or education using Keynote or PowerPoint to present design investigations, design proposals, or manufacturing summaries.
  • Experience or education applying failure analysis practices, including Design of Experiments, commonality analysis, and root-cause identification to improve product reliability and quality.
  • Experience or education setting up and analyzing mechanical assembly performance simulations using Ansys Workbench or SolidWorks FEA.
  • Experience or education designing for assembly using best practices, including part reduction, design symmetry, precision alignment markers, tooling and automation clearances, and part reuse.
  • Experience or education applying design-for-manufacturing principles through material selection, tolerance analysis, part geometry optimization, and integration of suitable joining techniques and manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience or education using GD&T best practices to ensure design intent, functional assembly, and manufacturability across multiple suppliers and vendors.
  • Experience or education prototyping with 3D printing, laser cutting, and laser engraving to rapidly iterate mechanical parts and assemblies and assess relative performance.
  • Experience using advanced statistical libraries, including Python Scikit-Learn, PyTorch, and Pandas, for exploratory data analysis and comprehensive data summaries.

Responsibilities

  • Develop state-of-the-art haptic solutions for Apple products, including iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • Lead the design, development, and validation of next-generation haptic actuators and experiences.
  • Own mechanical design and integration of a haptic actuator from concept through production.
  • Brainstorm concepts and solutions to haptic-related challenges.
  • Prototype, evaluate, and debug ideas.
  • Design and define mechanical components and assembly schemes.
  • Generate detailed specifications and drawings.
  • Analyze static and dynamic structures to quantify device performance.
  • Participate in developing manufacturing and assembly processes with external vendors.
  • Validate and characterize designs through multiple iterations.
  • Conduct failure analysis and design of experiments to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Generate new intellectual property.
  • Collaborate with Industrial Design and System Engineering to achieve functional and aesthetic goals.
  • Design for manufacturability with Process, Manufacturing Design, Technical Operations, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Communicate regularly across functions and management through written, verbal, and presentation formats.
  • Manage and track multiple priorities within schedule requirements.
  • Lead design reviews and design documentation releases.
