About The Position

Qualis LLC is seeking a Modeling & Simulation Systems Engineer II (IR Plume Mod/Sim Systems Engineer) to develop and deliver high-fidelity threat modeling products in support of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and its Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). The role supports Threat Systems Engineering (TSE), which develops models and simulations used to stimulate BMDS element models. This work includes kinematic missile modeling, infrared signature modeling, data production and analysis, and maintenance and sustainment of the TSE software baseline. TSE is a cornerstone of the Threat and Advanced Simulations Development (TASD) contract. The engineer handles and validates large, multidimensional datasets, including comparison of simulated data against measured test or flight data. The role calls for meticulous verification and validation, systematic troubleshooting of simulation and data-conversion failures, and the ability to detect silent errors that produce physically or mathematically incorrect results. The engineer also collaborates across teams, communicates effectively, and works within schedules and timelines. This position requires daily onsite work; remote or hybrid work is not available. Travel of up to 10% may be required to support business needs. Applicants must hold a current, active, in-scope U.S. Government Secret security clearance when applying, and the clearance is required to start.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline with 2 years of technical experience, or a master's degree with 0–2 years of experience; a STEM bachelor's degree is described as preferred in the posting.
  • Current, active, in-scope U.S. Government-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application; required to start.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or other scripting languages.
  • Foundational understanding of aerothermodynamics, radiative transfer, fluid dynamics, and molecular spectroscopy.
  • Foundational understanding of data analysis concepts.
  • Basic conceptual understanding of flight dynamics and aerodynamics.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail, including meticulous verification and validation of technical datasets.
  • Ability to systematically isolate variables and trace errors to input data, software bugs, or system configuration issues.
  • Ability to debug undocumented in-house tools or legacy scripts without relying on external support or documentation.
  • Proficiency in interpreting complex log files, console outputs, and stack traces.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a collaborative team environment and work within schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to work onsite daily; remote and hybrid work are not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, or a related STEM field.
  • Strong math, physics, or engineering background.
  • Modeling, simulation, and automation experience.
  • Experience with atmospheric modeling codes such as MODTRAN.
  • Experience with JANNAF radiative signature codes.
  • Experience working in Linux-based distributed computational environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver high-fidelity threat modeling products in support of MDA and BMDS.
  • Support development and use of models and simulations, including kinematic missile and infrared signature modeling.
  • Handle large-scale, multidimensional array datasets.
  • Validate simulated data against measured test or flight data.
  • Verify and validate large technical datasets and identify silent failures or physically or mathematically incorrect data.
  • Troubleshoot simulation failures and data-conversion tools by tracing errors to input data, software, or system configuration issues.
  • Read, parse, and debug legacy or custom code and scripts, including Python, MATLAB, or C++.
  • Analyze logs, console output, and stack traces to identify causes of failures.
  • Perform data production and analysis activities and support maintenance and sustainment of the TSE software baseline.
  • Collaborate with team members, communicate effectively, and prioritize and execute tasks within schedules and timelines.
  • Travel up to 10% of the time to support business needs.
