About The Position

Qualis LLC is seeking a Modeling & Simulation Systems Engineer II, also identified as an IR Plume Mod/Sim Systems Engineer, to develop and deliver high-fidelity threat modeling products in support of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and its Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). The position supports Threat Systems Engineering (TSE), which develops and sustains models and simulations used to stimulate BMDS element models. This work includes kinematic missile modeling, infrared signature modeling, data production and analysis, and maintenance and sustainment of the TSE software baseline. TSE is a cornerstone element of the Threat and Advanced Simulations Development (TASD) contract. The engineer handles large, multidimensional datasets; validates simulated data against measured test or flight data; and applies careful verification and validation practices. The role also requires troubleshooting simulation and data-conversion problems through root-cause analysis, debugging legacy or custom code, parsing logs and errors, and detecting silent failures that produce incorrect results despite successful execution. The engineer collaborates across teams, communicates effectively, and helps prioritize and complete work within schedules and timelines. The position requires daily onsite work, with no remote or hybrid option, and travel of up to 10% to support business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline with 2 years of technical experience, or a Master's degree with 0–2 years of experience; a STEM bachelor's degree is described as preferred in the qualification statement.
  • Current, active, in-scope U.S. Government-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application; required to start.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or other scripting languages.
  • Foundational understanding of aerothermodynamics, radiative transfer, fluid dynamics, and molecular spectroscopy.
  • Foundational understanding of data analysis concepts.
  • Basic conceptual understanding of flight dynamics and aerodynamics.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% of the time to support business needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to create and work within schedules and timelines.
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail in verifying and validating technical datasets.
  • Ability to troubleshoot simulation and data-conversion issues, debug legacy or custom code, parse logs, and detect silent data errors.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, or a related STEM field.
  • Strong math, physics, or engineering background.
  • Modeling, simulation, and automation experience.
  • Experience with atmospheric modeling codes such as MODTRAN.
  • Experience with JANNAF radiative signature codes.
  • Experience working in Linux-based distributed computational environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver high-fidelity threat modeling products in support of MDA and BMDS.
  • Support TSE modeling and simulation activities, including kinematic missile modeling, infrared signature modeling, data production and analysis, and software-baseline maintenance and sustainment.
  • Handle large-scale, multidimensional array datasets.
  • Validate simulated data against measured test or flight data.
  • Verify and validate large technical datasets with thoroughness and attention to detail.
  • Perform systematic root-cause analysis to determine whether simulation failures are caused by input data, software bugs, or system configuration issues.
  • Read, parse, and debug undocumented in-house tools and legacy scripts, including Python, MATLAB, or C++ code.
  • Parse logs, console outputs, and stack traces to identify simulation or data-conversion failures.
  • Identify and fix silent failures that produce physically or mathematically incorrect data.
  • Prioritize and execute tasks collaboratively and work within schedules and timelines.
  • Travel up to 10% of the time to support business needs.
