IR Plume Modeling Engineer

Qualis LLC•Colorado Springs, CO
•$87,000 - $105,000•Onsite

About The Position

Qualis LLC is seeking an IR Plume Modeling Engineer to develop high-fidelity threat missile signature data packages for use in a variety of modeling and simulation (M&S) tools and media. The engineer applies M&S methods and standard engineering and mathematical algorithms to accurately portray expected phenomenology during missile flight. The role requires working with little or no direct supervision, contributing to a product delivery team, and meeting time-critical delivery schedules. The position is located on-site at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Daily on-site work is required; remote and hybrid work are not available. The engineer will focus on infrared (IR) threat-model phenomenology and support MDA Ground Test Modeling and Simulation data production.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 2 years of related experience, or a master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 0 years of experience; the posting describes the bachelor’s degree as preferred.
  • Experience with technical analysis of M&S data sets.
  • Experience with verification and validation of M&S data.
  • Must already possess an active DoD Secret clearance.
  • Experience with scripting or automation languages such as Python, Bash, or MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of missile flight characteristics, motion, atmospheric dynamics, and performance.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Results-focused, self-motivated, and able to work in a dynamic environment and produce reliable products and documentation within established deadlines.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong time management and attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong mathematics, physics, or engineering background.
  • Experience analyzing ballistic missile flight characteristics, motion, atmospheric dynamics, and performance parameters.

  • Technical planning, project management, or project scheduling experience.
  • Experience with Blackbody IR Emissions.
  • Familiarity with Optical Signatures Code (OSC).
  • Experience with Joint Army Navy NASA Air Force (JANNAF) plume codes for predictive signatures, such as SOCRATES-P, PERCORP, and VIPER.
  • Strong knowledge of missile flight characteristics, motion, atmospheric dynamics, and performance.
  • Strong background in missile system engineering performance.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies, including Scrum and Kanban.
  • Familiarity with or experience in Model-based Systems Engineering theory and tools.
  • Active or interim DoD Secret clearance with the ability to obtain Top Secret clearance with access to SCI.

Responsibilities

  • Gain experience with threat-model phenomenology, focusing on infrared (IR) signatures.
  • Research IR signature predictions and simulation models.
  • Work with the team to complete data production needs supporting MDA Ground Test Modeling and Simulation.
  • Coordinate closely with TSE engineers on software requirements for threat-modeling tools.
  • Understand stakeholder requirements and ensure the quality production of threat missile data.
  • Develop high-fidelity threat missile signature data packages for use in M&S tools and media.
  • Apply engineering and mathematical algorithms to portray expected missile-flight phenomenology accurately.
