Mission Software Engineer

Anduril•Waltham, MA

About The Position

The Mission Software Engineer will join Anduril's Imaging Interfaces team, which builds and fields camera and sensor systems for security challenges. The role combines production software development with responsibility for keeping deployed systems operational. The engineer will diagnose issues across software, firmware, networking, and hardware; develop and maintain modular services running on edge-compute devices; support field operators; and represent the team during integrations with external teams and customers. Work may include extending a gRPC service, remotely troubleshooting deployed equipment, and traveling to customer integrations. The position requires broad system understanding, clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences, and comfort with varied, sometimes ambiguous work. Travel is expected approximately 25% of the time for field testing and customer integrations.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of software development experience with meaningful ownership of production systems after launch, including their health, uptime, and behavior in users' hands.
  • Deep proficiency in at least one of C++, TypeScript (Node.js/React), or Python, and ability to read, debug, and modify code in a second language across the stack.
  • At least 3 years working in Linux-based environments, including hands-on work with bare-metal hardware.
  • Ability to ramp quickly into unfamiliar languages, tools, and deployment systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve issues across system boundaries, including networking, services, and hardware interaction, without full visibility into every component.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical problems clearly to non-technical audiences and field operators.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Strength with performance-sensitive, real-time, or resource-constrained systems, such as edge or embedded systems.
  • Experience with gRPC or similar RPC frameworks.
  • Familiarity with systemd service management and observability practices on Linux.
  • Familiarity with Nix or NixOS.
  • Experience supporting fielded or deployed systems.
  • Experience with imaging, EO/IR, ISR, or command-and-control (C2) systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own the health and uptime of deployed imaging systems and drive issues through triage, diagnosis, and resolution across software, firmware, networks, and hardware.
  • Develop and extend reliable, observable, and maintainable production software services for edge-compute devices in austere environments.
  • Work directly with field operators and non-technical users to diagnose and resolve issues on deployed hardware.
  • Represent the team as a subject matter expert in integrations with other products and teams, remotely and on-site.
  • Build fluency across hardware, firmware, networking, and software, and optimize service interactions and graceful degradation when components fail.
  • Plan, build, and test complex functionality with firmware, hardware, and platform engineers across team and organizational boundaries.
  • Travel approximately 25% of the time for field testing and customer integrations.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers and are considered part of total compensation.
  • Top-tier benefits for full-time employees, including a comprehensive, competitive package available at little to no cost to employees.
