Senior Mission Software Engineer

Anduril•Waltham, MA
•$191,000 - $254,000

About The Position

The Imaging team builds and fields camera and sensor systems for security challenges faced by the United States and its allies. The team works across hardware, firmware, networked services, and cloud integrations, and supports systems throughout their deployment lifecycle. The Senior Mission Software Engineer will join the Imaging Interfaces team in a role combining production software development with operational support for fielded systems. The engineer will extend modular services running on edge-compute devices, diagnose issues across software, firmware, networking, and hardware, and help ensure deployed systems remain healthy and reliable. The role also involves supporting field operators and non-technical users, representing the team in external product integrations, and collaborating with hardware, firmware, and platform engineers. Travel is expected approximately 15% of the time for field testing and customer integrations.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software development experience with meaningful production responsibility, including ownership of systems after deployment.
  • Strong Python and C++ skills and the ability to work effectively in either language.
  • 8+ years of experience working in Linux-based environments, including bare-metal hardware.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve issues across system boundaries, including networking, services, and hardware interaction, even when visibility into components is incomplete.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical problems clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 15% of the time for field testing and customer integrations.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with gRPC or similar RPC frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Linux systems service management and observability practices.
  • React/JSX experience.
  • Familiarity with Nix or NixOS.
  • Experience supporting fielded or deployed systems, rather than only development environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own the health and uptime of deployed imaging systems; triage, diagnose, and drive resolution of issues across code, firmware, networking, and hardware.
  • Develop and extend reliable, observable, maintainable modular software services for edge-compute devices operating in austere environments.
  • Work directly with field operators and non-technical users to diagnose and resolve issues on deployed hardware.
  • Represent the team as a subject matter expert in integrations with other products and teams, remotely and on-site.
  • Build broad understanding of hardware, firmware, networking, and software interactions, and optimize services to degrade gracefully when components fail.
  • Plan, build, and test complex functionality in collaboration with firmware, hardware, and platform engineers.
  • Travel approximately 15% of the time for field testing and customer integrations.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers.
  • A comprehensive, competitive benefits package available at little to no cost to employees.
