Mission Software Engineer

Anduril•Waltham, MA

About The Position

The Imaging Interfaces team is seeking a Mission Software Engineer to build and maintain software for camera and sensor systems used in security applications. This is a hands-on, end-to-end role spanning production software development, field support, system integration, and troubleshooting across hardware, firmware, networking, and software. The engineer will help keep deployed imaging systems healthy and operational, diagnose issues in sometimes austere environments, and communicate clearly with field operators and external teams. The work may include extending services, investigating deployed-device issues, and traveling to support customer integrations. Travel is expected approximately 25% of the time for field testing and customer integrations. The role involves developing modular, reliable, observable, and maintainable services for edge-compute devices; supporting field operations; representing the team as a technical subject matter expert in integrations; and collaborating with firmware, hardware, and platform engineers. The engineer is expected to develop broad system-stack fluency and help services interact effectively and degrade gracefully when components fail. Successful engineers take ownership of problems through resolution, communicate proactively, document findings, methodically investigate ambiguous issues, and represent the team well in external engagements. Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret clearance is required.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of software development experience with meaningful production ownership, including responsibility for systems after release.
  • Deep proficiency in at least one of C++, TypeScript (Node.js/React), or Python, and ability to read, debug, and modify code in a second language across the stack boundary.
  • Ability to ramp quickly into unfamiliar languages, tools, and deployment systems.
  • At least 2 years working in Linux-based environments, including hands-on work with bare-metal hardware.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve issues across system boundaries, including networking, services, and hardware interaction, even without full visibility into every component.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical problems clearly to non-technical audiences and field operators.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Strength with performance-sensitive, real-time, or resource-constrained systems, such as edge or embedded systems.
  • Experience with gRPC or similar RPC frameworks.
  • Familiarity with systemd service management and Linux observability practices.
  • Familiarity with Nix or NixOS.
  • Experience supporting fielded or deployed systems, rather than only development environments.
  • Experience with imaging, EO/IR, ISR, or command-and-control (C2) systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own the health and uptime of deployed imaging systems and triage, diagnose, and drive resolution of issues across software, firmware, networking, and hardware.
  • Develop and extend modular production software services for edge-compute devices, with an emphasis on reliability, observability, and maintainability.
  • Work directly with field operators and non-technical users to diagnose and resolve issues on deployed hardware.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert in integrations with other products and teams, remotely and on-site.
  • Build end-to-end understanding of hardware, firmware, networking, and software, and optimize service interactions and graceful degradation when components fail.
  • Plan, build, and test complex functionality in collaboration with firmware, hardware, and platform engineers.
  • Travel approximately 25% of the time for field testing and customer integrations.
  • Communicate proactively, document findings, share lessons learned, and keep relevant stakeholders informed.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers.
  • Top-tier benefits for full-time employees, described as a comprehensive, competitive benefits package available at little to no cost to employees.
