Mission Engineer - Baton Rouge

Axon•Baton Rouge, LA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Mission Engineer is an embedded, customer-facing technical owner responsible for customer outcomes across the full lifecycle of Axon's ecosystem within a strategic account. The role combines technical building, operational leadership, and executive communication to help agencies transform how they operate. The engineer works onsite with agency personnel, uses Axon's platform and products to design, build, test, deploy, and iterate on production-ready capabilities, and remains accountable for outcomes rather than coordinating other teams' work. Success is measured by agency operational outcomes and working solutions in production. The day-to-day is intentionally undefined, with priorities changing according to agency mission tempo, operational crises, and emerging opportunities. The role includes an onsite presence of approximately three to four days per week and requires adapting to evolving needs. The Mission Engineer applies responsible innovation safeguards, including CJIS compliance, evidence integrity, and privacy, and collaborates across Axon Product, Engineering, Support, Services, and Sales.

Requirements

  • Experience in customer-facing technical roles, program management, operational transformation, or complex deployment environments; typically eight or more years, with varied experience welcome.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and ship working automations, agents, workflows, integrations, or AI-enabled tools in customer environments, including configuring products, writing integration logic, and delivering production-ready solutions.
  • Ability to own the build; use of AI to assist is expected, but ownership of the solution is required.
  • Comfort working across technical and operational domains, including hardware, software, cloud, AI-enabled technologies, and integrated systems.
  • Strong communication skills with technical teams and senior stakeholders, including command staff in mission-critical environments.
  • Full ownership mentality and ability to navigate ambiguity, fast-changing environments, and competing priorities across Product, Engineering, Sales, Support, and Services.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CJIS compliance and adhere to security standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Former law enforcement or military experience.
  • Experience in public safety, law enforcement, corrections, or other mission-critical operational environments.
  • Familiarity with Records, Evidence, digital workflows, AI-enabled platforms, or integrated public safety ecosystems.
  • Background in forward-deployed engineering, solutions architecture, or operational transformation at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Discover agency problems onsite and translate them into compliant, buildable solutions tied to mission outcomes.
  • Design, build, test, and ship AI agents, workflows, automations, integrations, and data pipelines on Axon's platform with real users and data.
  • Configure, integrate, and extend Axon products, including DEMS, Fusus, AI Era, and Records, within agency environments.
  • Iterate on solutions in the field until adoption is established and document reusable patterns.
  • Apply CJIS, evidence-integrity, and privacy safeguards in every build.
  • Troubleshoot onsite and coordinate root-cause resolution with Product, Engineering, Support, and Services.
  • Build and deploy AI-powered workflows, including agents, prompts, RAG, and evaluations, to address defined agency problems.
  • Drive hands-on adoption and measure usage, workflow impact, and mission outcomes; iterate when changes do not stick.
  • Assess onsite workflows, identify friction and mission impact, validate hypotheses with command staff and operators, and define solutions.
  • Build trusted relationships with agency leadership and operational stakeholders; lead QBRs, mission reviews, and strategic planning.
  • Define success metrics and capture baselines before major deployments.
  • Share customer insights, workflow patterns, and adoption barriers with Product and Engineering to inform roadmap decisions.
  • Turn one-off builds into reusable playbooks and operational frameworks.
  • Identify expansion opportunities based on demonstrated impact and partner with Sales on long-term account strategy.
  • Maintain a consistent onsite presence of approximately three to four days per week.
  • Track customer success metrics, including time to first production use, adoption depth by role and site, workflow improvements, and mission outcomes.
  • Support Sales-to-post-sales onboarding and handoff, establishing goals and accountability from day one.
