Mission Engineer - Baton Rouge

Axon•Baton Rouge, LA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Mission Engineer is an embedded, onsite owner of customer outcomes within a strategic account, accountable for the lifecycle of Axon’s ecosystem—from deployment and adoption through optimization and ongoing success. The role combines technical building, operational leadership, and executive presence to help agencies transform their operations. Success is measured by operational outcomes and solutions working in production, rather than activity or presentation materials. The day-to-day is intentionally flexible, with priorities shaped by agency needs, operational crises, and emerging opportunities. The Mission Engineer works onsite with agency users to identify problems, design and build compliant solutions using Axon’s platform, and iterate until those solutions are adopted. The role includes building AI agents, workflows, automations, integrations, and data pipelines; configuring and extending Axon products; applying security and responsible innovation safeguards; and coordinating troubleshooting across internal teams. The Mission Engineer also assesses agency workflows, establishes success metrics and baselines, leads strategic reviews, supports adoption, shares field insights with Product and Engineering, and develops reusable playbooks. The position requires consistent onsite presence of approximately three to four days per week and supports the transition from Sales to post-sales onboarding.

Requirements

  • Experience in customer-facing technical roles, program management, operational transformation, or complex deployment environments; typically eight or more years, with varied experience welcome.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and ship production-ready automations, agents, workflows, integrations, or AI-enabled tools in customer environments.
  • Ability to configure products, write integration logic, and own delivery of working solutions; using AI assistance is expected, but ownership of the build is required.
  • Comfort working across technical and operational domains, including hardware, software, cloud, AI-enabled technologies, and integrated systems.
  • Strong communication skills with technical teams and senior stakeholders, including command staff in mission-critical environments.
  • Ability to take ownership in ambiguous, fast-changing environments and navigate competing priorities across Product, Engineering, Sales, Support, and Services.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CJIS compliance and adhere to security standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Former law enforcement or military experience.
  • Experience in public safety, law enforcement, corrections, or other mission-critical operational environments.
  • Familiarity with Records, Evidence, digital workflows, AI-enabled platforms, or integrated public safety ecosystems.
  • Background in forward-deployed engineering, solutions architecture, or operational transformation at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Discover agency problems onsite and translate them into buildable, compliant solutions tied to mission outcomes.
  • Design, build, test, and ship AI agents, workflows, automations, integrations, and data pipelines on Axon’s platform with real users and data.
  • Configure, integrate, and extend Axon products—including DEMS, Fusus, AI Era, and Records—in agency environments.
  • Iterate in the field until solutions are adopted, and document reusable patterns.
  • Apply CJIS, evidence-integrity, privacy, and other responsible innovation guardrails in every build.
  • Troubleshoot onsite and coordinate root-cause resolution with Product, Engineering, Support, and Services.
  • Build and deploy AI-powered workflows, including agents, prompts, RAG, and evaluations, to solve defined agency problems.
  • Drive hands-on adoption, measure usage, workflow impact, and mission outcomes, and iterate as needed.
  • Assess agency workflows, identify friction and mission impact, and define build priorities.
  • Develop and validate hypotheses with command staff and operators, then build solutions to address agency needs.
  • Build relationships with agency leadership and operational stakeholders; lead QBRs, mission reviews, and strategic planning.
  • Define success metrics and capture baselines before major deployments.
  • Capture customer insights, workflow patterns, and adoption barriers and share field intelligence with Product and Engineering.
  • Turn individual builds into reusable playbooks and operational frameworks.
  • Identify expansion opportunities based on demonstrated impact and partner with Sales on account strategy.
  • Maintain consistent onsite presence of approximately three to four days per week.
  • Track customer success metrics, including time to first production use, adoption depth, workflow improvements, and mission outcomes.
  • Support Sales-to-post-sales onboarding and handoff, establishing goals and accountability from the outset.
