About The Position

The USD Military & Veterans Program (MVP) provides comprehensive student-focused services to all USD military-connected students, from initial consideration of higher education through their transition to alumni status. The MVP enhances military and veteran students’ abilities to achieve their higher education and career goals effectively, while utilizing their benefits efficiently. This program nurtures academic success and personal growth, communicates the value of the military population to the campus and community, and counters negative stereotyping. This position is responsible for tracking, supporting, and reporting on the academic progress of military-connected students, focusing on their transitions, sense of belonging, academic success, retention, graduation, and career readiness. The role also ensures academic compliance with VA benefits and uses data to create, revise, or retire programs to align with university and student affairs strategic plans. The position may also lead or contribute to division/campus projects outside of daily duties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in higher education.
  • At least two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in Student Affairs or student support services.
  • Proven ability to initiate, coordinate, oversee, and complete various projects with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent public speaking skills and ability to use current technology to present material to large groups of people.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with ability to handle several major projects simultaneously.
  • Willingness to support the Catholic mission and vision of the University.
  • Demonstrated practice of centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in one’s work including an ongoing commitment to personal learning and development in this area.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student learning and development in the co-curriculum and experience assessing the impact of programs and related services.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, colleagues, administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
  • Official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic, career, and personal advising to Veteran, Military Affiliated, and Active Duty Military student populations.
  • Monitor mid-term deficiencies and provide outreach to students to identify and address barriers impacting scholastic achievement.
  • Coordinate tutoring efforts of the Epstein Family Military Center.
  • Offer programs on academic-related topics such as note taking, study skills, and time management.
  • Advise students on current course requirements for degree and certificate programs.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Registrar’s Office and the Transfer Analyst for education plans and VA benefits.
  • Act as a point of contact for registration-related questions regarding military and veteran student course selection.
  • Liaise with academic departments, student services, and instructional faculty for Veteran-related issues.
  • Refer students to clinical, recreational, and social opportunities on and off campus.
  • Act as a School Certifying Official (SCO) in accordance with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs School Certifying Official Handbook.
  • Consult with VA officials and the State Approving Agency for regulations and compliance procedures.
  • Monitor student coursework for compliance with educational plans to avoid under/over payment and institutional liability.
  • Process student enrollment certifications, unit changes, and enrollment verifications.
  • Process VA documents/forms related to educational benefits.
  • Supervise 2-3 VA Work study students, providing guidance and oversight.
  • Assist in the coordination of orientation and onboarding of military-connected students.
  • Lead group presentations including student-interest workshops, seminars, orientations, and group advising.
  • Participate in curriculum development, program review, and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Create, implement, and evaluate programs related to co-curricular learning outcomes.
  • Engage students in conversations about holistic development and campus connection while discussing academic progress.
  • Provide referrals to other campus resources and services.
  • Encourage student involvement in co-curricular opportunities.
  • Serve as a liaison with the Career Development Center.
  • Develop, implement, and assess career networking opportunities.
  • Assist in connecting students with military-friendly employers.
  • Work with outside veteran service organizations and other resources.
  • Represent the department and university at events on and off campus.
  • Contribute to or lead additional division/campus projects.
  • Attend staff meetings, committee meetings, and other assigned meetings.
  • Complete ad hoc reports as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
