About The Position

The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) is seeking a qualified Mi'Kmaq Language Teacher for Grades 4-8 and a Gr. 7-8 Health Teacher. The SRCE is part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, established to support student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,948 students and 375 children in pre-primary programs across 14 locations in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, encompassing the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond. This position involves developing and delivering an early Mi'kmaw language program and incorporating cultural teachings and traditional protocols into program delivery.

Requirements

  • Valid teacher certification for the Province of Nova Scotia (desirable)
  • Classroom experience teaching Mi'kmaw language
  • Methodology courses, experience, or practicum teaching in the subject area(s) at the appropriate level for the competition
  • Excellent classroom and student management skills
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of technologies used to enhance instruction and learning
  • Knowledge and/or experience in implementing inclusive teaching and assessment strategies
  • Proficient knowledge of Mi'kmaw history, with an understanding of culture, traditions, ceremonies, principles, and values
  • Mi'kmaw descent
  • Must provide at least three (3) work-related references, one of which must be your most recent supervisor.
  • Must provide a current (within the last 6 months), and clear Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry prior to employment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver an early Mi'kmaw language program focusing on Grades 4-8
  • Incorporate cultural teachings and traditional protocols into program delivery.
