About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Crew Leader, the Meter Reader reads meters on an assigned route, which may change, and maintains reports and records. The position involves daily contact with the public and requires courtesy, tact, and diplomacy. The job may also include maintenance work, making water taps, responding to emergencies when required, and making minor equipment repairs and adjustments. The role requires considerable knowledge to work effectively with little direct supervision in varied situations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Considerable knowledge of the subject to perform effectively with little direct supervision in varied work situations.
• Valid Texas driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
• The position was evaluated on the premise that the incumbent already holds a T.C.E.Q. Class “D” License; employees without this license receive one grade lower and perform lower-skilled assignments until they obtain it.
• Ability to meet the physical demands, including medium lifting up to 50 pounds and significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, pushing, and pulling.

Responsibilities

• Read meters on the assigned route.
• Record findings, including bad meters and straight connects.
• Maintain records of meters read and report meters that are inaccessible for readings.
• Check meters and visible plumbing for correct installation and proper functioning; report defects to the immediate supervisor.
• Check meter readings for consistency.
• Perform maintenance worker duties when not reading meters.
• Make water taps.
• Inspect equipment for proper operation and safety before operating it.
• Respond to emergencies when required, subject to on-call requirements.
• Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
• Walk for extended periods under varying working conditions.
• Perform other related tasks as required.
