About The Position

The Metal Additive Engineer designs for additive manufacturing and operates metal 3D printers using SolidWorks. The role works with a cross-functional team across engineering, sales, and customer support to develop and execute a business plan for growth in the 3D printing market. The engineer contributes to the design, development, and testing of additive processes; evaluates parts for materials and equipment selection, manufacturability, design optimization, and business case; and develops optimized designs and build files for consistent, high-quality parts produced efficiently. The role also supports customer sales development, continuous improvement, ISO 9001-type activities, and company projects. It requires collaboration with Materials Engineers to develop print parameters, heat treatments, and design allowables for existing and new alloys. The position involves work in manufacturing areas and requires use of personal protective equipment and compliance with safety, hazardous-waste, and company policies.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, Material Science, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
2–5+ years of experience with additive machines, including parameter development and process control.
At least 2 years of experience using Siemens NX or similar 3D CAD software.
Experience with additive simulation software and topology optimization software.
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Proficient GD&T knowledge and ability to think three-dimensionally.
Hands-on experience with various additive and subtractive manufacturing and joining techniques for metals and polymers.
Ability to work well in an integrated, collaborative team environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with different levels of management and teams.
Highly self-motivated; able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment while maintaining confidentiality.
Superior organizational and analytical skills, time management and prioritization abilities, and meticulous attention to detail.
Independent, with demonstrated ability to deliver successful designs under tight timing constraints.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays when needed.
Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a full background check.

Nice To Haves

Experience with powder-bed or binder-jetting additive machines.
Experience with composites, high-volume manufacturing processes, material science, and/or biomimicry.
Passion for rapid prototyping and 3D printing.
Customer service or customer interaction experience.

Responsibilities

Contribute to a team of engineers designing, developing, and testing all facets of the additive process.
Assess additive-manufacturing part candidates for material and equipment selection, manufacturability, design optimization, and business case.
Generate optimized designs and build files to produce high-quality parts in minimum time with maximum consistency.
Refine existing part designs and optimize new designs to leverage additive technology.
Work with Materials Engineers to investigate properties, geometric accuracy, and surface finish, and to develop print parameters, heat treatments, and design allowables for existing and new alloys.
Manage multiple competing projects and analyze complex problems, develop solutions, and respond to ambiguity and changing priorities.
Create reports and materials supporting company projects and activities.
Participate in continuous improvement projects and ISO 9001-type activities.
Support customer sales development through technical exchanges and communications.
Design and detail molds, models, and fixtures.
Communicate with outside customers.
Maintain housekeeping in the Additive Rooms.
Specify additive materials and read and understand blueprints and drawings.
Use multiple powder-bed additive-manufacturing machines.
Apply Six Sigma quality tools, when appropriate, to define, measure, analyze, improve, and control processes and outcomes.
Maintain and support processes, procedures, and KPIs owned by the position.
