Metal Additive Process Engineer

Optisys•Murray, UT
•Onsite

About The Position

Optisys is an antenna technology company based in Salt Lake City, Utah, combining advanced RF design with metal additive manufacturing to develop integrated solutions for commercial aerospace and defense. The Metal Additive Process Engineer serves as a hub between product design and production, coordinating with organizations across the company and applying knowledge of the additive manufacturing lifecycle and related processes. The role develops and plans manufacturing methods to enable successful production. The engineer owns assigned work centers and develops work instructions, process controls, and audits, particularly for laser powder bed fusion printers, heat treatment, and part de-powdering. The role creates product routings and manufacturing methods, prepares production documentation and printer slice files, and supports design reviews by communicating manufacturability, process limitations, and potential schedule, budget, or technical risks. The position promotes lean manufacturing, 5S, process and equipment optimization, quality-system maintenance, continuous improvement, and safe work practices. During the first three months, the focus is on learning Optisys’ additive process-control documents, model preparation and slicing for PBF printers, and use of the ERP system to build Bills of Processes. This is an onsite role. Optisys describes the opportunity as being part of a fast-growing, technology-driven company in a collaborative environment, with competitive pay, full benefits, and work that can contribute to aerospace manufacturing. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents (Green Card).

Requirements

  • Ability to write process instructions, work instructions, and standards that support repeatable manufacturing results.
  • Proficiency with commercial CAD, simulation, or manufacturing tools, such as finite element analysis, CAD model preparation, or additive manufacturing workflows.
  • Experience with print preparation, support design, and slicing for additive manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of metal material properties and how process variations affect them.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, material science, or a related field, or deep industry experience.
  • 5–10 years of experience in additive manufacturing and/or manufacturing engineering.
  • Familiarity with metal additive manufacturing standards such as SAE/AMS 7003 and NASA-STD-6030.
  • Experience with IA9100 quality standards.
  • Experience with heat treatment process controls.
  • Experience with configuration management and revision control.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status (Green Card).

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in Python, scripting, and process automation.
  • Background in metal material science, including tensile testing.
  • Strong familiarity with Laser Powder Bed Fusion.
  • Experience with NX and Materialise Magics CAD tools.

Responsibilities

  • Own assigned work centers and maintain and develop work instructions, process controls, and process audits, particularly for laser powder bed fusion printers, heat treatment, and part de-powdering.
  • Create part routings and methods of manufacturing for products throughout the production flow, and produce shop-floor documentation.
  • Prepare slice files for laser powder bed fusion manufacturing.
  • Support design reviews by advising program management and mechanical design engineers on manufacturability, design limitations and capabilities, and schedule, budget, or technical risks.
  • Promote lean manufacturing, 5S, and process and equipment optimization.
  • Help achieve monthly KPIs, including on-time delivery, scrap rates, non-conformances, defects per opportunity, safety, and equipment utilization.
  • Hold manufacturing readiness reviews with key stakeholders before releasing parts to production.
  • Participate in daily planning and shop-floor execution meetings.
  • Help maintain the quality management system and conduct operational and work-center audits to support continuous improvement.
  • Participate in material review board meetings to help resolve quality concerns.
  • Promote safety through proper PPE use, hazard identification and reporting, and safe behavior.
  • During the first three months, become fluent in Optisys’ additive process-control documents, learn model preparation and slicing for PBF printers, and learn to use the ERP system to build Bills of Processes.
