About The Position

Precise Systems is seeking a Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer to provide technical and programmatic support to the Virginia Class Submarine Program (PMS450) and the U.S. Navy’s Team Submarine Program Offices. The position requires in-person support in Washington, D.C., and the employee must hold and maintain a Secret security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required because of the sensitivity of customer-related requirements. The engineer provides additive manufacturing (AM) expertise across planning, acquisition, design, development, testing, and production. The role supports technical reviews and engineering analyses, evaluates production design data and documentation, and helps assess operability, technical merit, schedule risk, production processes, and the ability to manufacture components. The engineer contributes to risk mitigation and recommendations concerning production, migration, program schedules, and infrastructure upgrades. As part of an engineering team, the engineer works with powder-bed and powder-fed additive processes, generates optimized build files, helps improve existing designs and develop new parts for additive manufacturing, and collaborates with materials engineers and other disciplines to establish effective print parameters and production processes. The role also documents findings and processes in reports, procedures, and manuals and communicates hardware results to Responsible Engineers to support continuous improvement. The position calls for a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or another engineering discipline and at least ten years of experience in propulsion component design or metallic additive technology development. The role may lead and direct others, typically reports to the Technical Director or APM, and involves travel of up to 10%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or another engineering discipline.
  • At least ten years of experience in propulsion component design or development of metallic additive technologies.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills, including the ability to meet with program officials and influence actions needed to meet technical program milestones.
  • Experience briefing senior leaders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, often under short, multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to travel up to 10%.
  • Must hold and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in aeronautical, astronautical, or mechanical engineering.
  • Experience operating additive manufacturing machines, including parameter development and process control.
  • Experience with additive simulation software.
  • Experience with topology optimization software.
  • Knowledge of additive and subtractive manufacturing and metal joining techniques.
  • Understanding of optics and lasers.
  • Familiarity with engineering material properties and processing attributes, particularly for titanium or nickel-based alloys.
  • Experience designing and operating propulsion fluid components, such as valves.
  • Experience setting up and conducting multifactorial design experiments (DOEs).
  • Ability to conduct trade studies using first principles and engineering fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in compressible and incompressible flow, thermodynamics, thermochemistry, mechanics, materials, and electrical circuits.
  • Experience with Finite Element Modeling and Postprocessing (FEMAP), ANSYS, or similar structural analysis tools.
  • Hands-on experience testing aerospace components or fluid systems, including pressure, hot-fire, and environmental testing.
  • Navy Fleet submarine operational experience.
  • Technical knowledge of the SUBSAFE program.
  • Ten years of experience with Navy acquisition and Submarine Programs.
  • Recent experience in Team Submarine.
  • Submarine engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting a submarine acquisition program.
  • Technical or engineering experience working with DoW acquisition programs and processes.
  • Experience developing technical standards.
  • Knowledge of engineering and acquisition fundamentals and expertise with undersea shipbuilding programs.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and conceptual thinking skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and develop acquisition management solutions, contributing to mid-level initiatives and supporting clients with technical expertise.
  • Provide additive manufacturing engineering consulting and participate in technical reviews.
  • Conduct engineering analyses of systems and subsystems, assessing operability, technical merit, and schedule risk.
  • Review and evaluate production design data and documentation; prepare, test, and evaluate additive manufacturing engineering changes.
  • Analyze producibility and production operations, processes, and systems for production items.
  • Recommend technical directorate team coordination and risk-mitigation strategies related to production and migration.
  • Advise on strategies addressing migration, program schedules, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Contribute to the design, development, and testing of additive manufacturing processes using powder-bed and powder-fed approaches.
  • Generate optimized build files to produce high-quality parts efficiently and consistently.
  • Collaborate with engineers to refine existing parts and optimize new parts for additive manufacturing.
  • Work with Materials Engineers to investigate material properties, geometric accuracy, and surface finish, and to develop print parameters, heat treatments, and design allowables for existing and new alloys.
  • Work across disciplines on processes that support optimal additive part production.
  • Communicate hardware production results and feedback to Responsible Engineers to support continuous development and improvement.
  • Produce reports, procedures, and manuals documenting results and maturing development processes for production.
  • May lead and direct the work of others.
  • Travel up to 10%.
