Laboratory assistants work under the direct supervision of a medical technologist (Medical Laboratory Specialist) and a pathologist or other qualified physician. They perform pre-analytical, post-analytical, and analytical tasks in histology, cytology, microbiology, and the general laboratory. Duties vary by site and include supporting clinical testing, preparing and processing specimens, assisting with laboratory operations, maintaining required records, and following laboratory, safety, confidentiality, and infection-control policies. The role serves patients ranging in age from birth to 100+ years. The Medical Laboratory Assistant (ASCP) credential is required within 12 months of hire or transfer into the role. Candidates must meet one of the specified ASCP education and experience pathways, all of which include clinical laboratory experience in specimen preparation and processing, support for clinical testing, and laboratory operations. Organization, manual dexterity, customer service, communication, teamwork, and computer skills are required. Six months of clinical or microbiology laboratory experience and/or one year of experience handling biological specimens is preferred. The work may involve public contact and stressful situations, including trauma, grief, and death; exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; and wearing personal protective equipment. The role requires mobility within the facility, adequate vision and hearing, dexterity, and the ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods and sometimes stoop, kneel, or crouch. The physical demand level is light, with occasional lifting or carrying of 11–20 pounds and frequent handling of 10 pounds or use of walking, standing, pushing, or pulling controls.
