At Stony Brook Medicine, Medical Assistants provide clinical, laboratory, and clerical support in hospital ambulatory services, outpatient clinics, and laboratories. They assist physicians and other medical personnel with patient care, prepare patients for procedures and examinations, record vital data, and perform routine laboratory procedures such as phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen processing. They also greet and direct patients, produce reports, answer telephones, gather and enter data, and schedule appointments. This is a nonsupervisory role in which clinical duties are performed at least 50% of the time according to prescribed procedures. Medical Assistants work under the direct supervision and guidance of nursing personnel, physicians, and other medical personnel. They share pertinent patient-care information with those personnel and refer abnormal findings or conditions to a supervisor. They do not perform duties requiring professional judgment, critical thinking, assessment, or provision of skilled care. In emergencies, they summon physicians and nursing personnel and may gather needed equipment. This title is included in New York’s NY HELPS program. During the program, the title may be filled by noncompetitive appointment without an examination, provided candidates meet the minimum qualifications. Temporary appointments may be made; the posting describes a process for changing a satisfactorily performing temporary NY HELPS employee to permanent noncompetitive status, with later conversion to competitive status expected. The position may be designated essential during institutional emergencies and may require respiratory protection. Hospital positions may be subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary.
