About The Position

A new opportunity has arisen for an Aeromechanics Specialist to join LibertyWorks supporting our broad portfolio of defense programs. In this role, you’ll support the evaluation of various turbomachinery subsystems, including fan, compressor, and/or turbine gas paths, by assessing fluid-structure interaction and the subsequent vibration of airfoils and other components. Evaluations will be performed both computationally and experimentally for preliminary design, engine certification, optimization, cost reductions, and failure investigations across a wide range of applications. As a specialist in this field, you will have the opportunity to bring forward innovative analytical solutions for customers on new/fielded products to resolve important issues related to high cycle fatigue, flutter, damping and mistuning.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 2+ years of aeromechanical experience OR A Masters degree in Engineering, with academic focus related to aeromechanics OR JD/PhD, with academic focus related to aeromechanics
  • To be considered for this opportunity, you must be eligible to obtain and maintain security clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong interest in the field of turbomachinery aeromechanics and willingness to develop new skills
  • Previous experience with computational fluid dynamics, with interest in unsteady simulations with fluid-structure interaction
  • Previous experience with collecting and analyzing aeromechanics-related data, such as from strain gages and blade tip timing/light probes/NSMS
  • Familiarity with finite elements analysis, specifically modal analysis
  • Programming skills such as Bash, Fortran, Matlab, and Python
  • Knowledge of ongoing academic research related to aeroelasticity in gas turbines

Responsibilities

  • Run aeromechanics analysis with in-house CFD to evaluate forced response, flutter, rotating stall and other aeroelastic phenomena.
  • Evaluating mistuning and nonlinear dynamics
  • Perform basic computer programming as needed to work more efficiently.
  • Using reduced order models to evaluate the effects of inlet distortion, mistuning, intake acoustics, and other parameters on various aeromechanics related problems
  • Test planning and post-processing to support aeromechanics testing and to validate analytical methods.
  • Interpreting test data to identify and explain component vibration
  • Identify new product introduction requirements for aeromechanics and working with subject matter experts to establish certification strategies
  • Collaborate with the local and global aeromechanics community to develop rules, tools, methods, and people.
  • Collaborate with aero designers, mechanical designers, stress analysts and test engineers to progress new engine designs and support in service vibration investigations
  • Communicating technical and business results via reports and presentations to senior engineers, both within and external to Rolls-Royce
