Mechanical Design Engineer I/II - Space

Antares•Los Angeles, CA
•$90,000 - $150,000•Onsite

About The Position

Antares is hiring a Level I or Level II Mechanical Design Engineer for its Mission Engineering team. The role supports hardware design and development for nuclear power systems intended for space and for the surfaces of the Moon and Mars. The engineer will own components or deliverables, development tests, and product responsibilities, including interfaces with other systems and how hardware fits into the larger system. Work spans sourcing, building, testing, and improving first-of-a-kind hardware. The engineer will contribute to system-layout, interface, and packaging trades with cross-disciplinary teams, and will work across CAD design, system analysis, design reviews, thermal and mechanical interface definition, requirements ownership and decomposition, and design manufacturability and scalability. The work may take a clean-sheet design through procurement and development or qualification testing, and includes supporting tooling, ground support equipment, facility upgrades, and emerging process documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related physics-based field.
  • 1–3+ years of experience in space system or product mechanical design, system configuration, and layout.
  • Expertise with CAD tools such as NX or CATIA.
  • Past experience with PLM and other manufacturing planning and management systems.
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary to support critical milestones.
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site full time.
  • Must meet the stated ITAR eligibility requirements or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related physics-based field.
  • Experience designing, analyzing, and integrating space hardware.
  • Leadership experience on a project or research team.
  • Strong project management, cross-disciplinary communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to convey technical information to non-specialists.
  • Understanding of fluid systems, solid mechanics, and heat transfer fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated initiative and willingness to go the extra mile.
  • Knowledge of materials science, material selection, and material compatibility.
  • Ability to conduct system sizing and first-order engineering analyses.
  • Mechanical design and GD&T/drawing experience, including taking a design into production.

Responsibilities

  • Own hardware or hardware-related deliverables as part of the larger space nuclear system.
  • Drive requirements definition and decomposition, build and test cycles, and defend design decisions throughout the design lifecycle, taking concepts through CDR and beyond.
  • Own CAD models, manage configurations, and produce drawings, DFMEA, and related design documentation.
  • Support development testing, including test setup, test definition, and test documentation.
  • Coordinate with nuclear, thermal, structures, manufacturing, and quality teams to develop a system architecture that meets mission and product requirements.
  • Develop clean-sheet designs through hardware procurement and development or qualification testing.
  • Support design reviews and integration and test planning; define manufacturing plans and generate work instructions as needed.
  • Own or support the design of tooling, ground support equipment, and facility upgrades.
  • Develop and document emerging processes.
