Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Space

Antares•Los Angeles, CA
•$145,000 - $190,000•Onsite

About The Position

As a Mechanical Design Engineer in the Mission Engineering team, you will own hardware associated with nuclear power systems in space and on the surface of the Moon and Mars. Serving as the Responsible Engineer for space hardware, you will take hardware from clean-sheet design through build, development testing, qualification, and integration. You will own the complete hardware and system lifecycle, including interfaces with other systems, system fit, sourcing, building, testing, and design improvements for a first-of-a-kind system. You will drive trades on system layout, interfaces, and packaging, working with cross-disciplinary teams to refine configurations and close design loops. The role spans CAD design, system analysis, design reviews, thermal and mechanical interface definition, requirements ownership and decomposition, and design manufacturability and scalability. Antares develops mass-producible, inherently safe, deployable microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications. The company is based in Torrance, California, in a 322,000-square-foot facility with areas for collaboration, R&D, and production. The role may require long hours and weekends to support critical milestones, and requires willingness and ability to obtain and retain a security clearance. Applicants must meet the stated U.S. export-control eligibility requirements or be eligible to obtain required authorizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related physics-based field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in space-system or product mechanical design, system configuration, and layout.
  • Expertise with CAD tools such as NX or CATIA.
  • Past experience with PLM and other manufacturing planning and management systems.
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary to support critical milestones.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain and retain a security clearance.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, qualifying refugee or asylee, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations under ITAR requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related physics-based field.
  • Expertise in the design, analysis, and integration of nuclear or space nuclear systems.
  • Leadership experience on a project or research team.
  • Strong project management, cross-disciplinary communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to convey technical information to non-specialists.
  • Understanding of fundamental principles in fluid systems and solid mechanics.
  • Demonstrated initiative and high-impact or high-ROI contributions.
  • Broad knowledge of materials science and material selection, especially for nuclear applications.
  • Ability to conduct complex design trades, system sizing, and first-order engineering analyses while identifying analysis limitations and associated design risks.
  • Very strong design skills and GD&T and drawings experience, including taking a design into production.

Responsibilities

  • Own a subsystem and its related hardware as part of the larger space nuclear system.
  • Drive system-level layout and requirements definition and decomposition; manage build and test cycles; defend design decisions across all phases; and take concepts through CDR and beyond.
  • Own CAD models and configuration management, and produce drawings and DFMEA.
  • Drive cross-discipline alignment and trade studies.
  • Coordinate with nuclear, thermal, structures, manufacturing, and quality teams to develop a system architecture that satisfies mission and product requirements.
  • Develop clean-sheet designs through hardware procurement and development and qualification testing.
  • Support design reviews and integration and test planning for hardware.
  • Define manufacturing plans and generate work instructions as needed.
  • Own the hardware lifecycle, including sourcing, building, testing, and designing improvements.
