Senior Space Systems Design Engineer

Draper•Cambridge, MA
•$82,300 - $220,000•Onsite

About The Position

Draper is an independent, nonprofit research and development company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with more than 2,000 employees. The Digital Engineering and Enabling Technologies Division is seeking a Senior Space Systems Design Engineer to apply systems thinking and advanced methodologies to a new space-based application. The role involves interdisciplinary work across tradespace exploration, multidisciplinary analysis and optimization, model-based engineering, modeling and simulation, software development and integration, and advanced algorithms. The engineer will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, becoming knowledgeable in different problem domains and identifying relevant modeling and analysis techniques. The role includes developing or integrating multi-domain models of suitable fidelity, presenting results that support system-level analysis, performance trade-offs, and decision-making, and communicating technical concepts effectively with customers, engineers, managers, and other stakeholders. Applicants selected for the position must obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance. Consistent on-site support is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, or another relevant engineering field.
  • 5–7 years of experience in systems analysis or a related area.
  • Experience using MBSE tools such as SysML and knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience integrating descriptive modeling tools with other simulation tools.
  • Excellent mathematical skills and a thorough understanding of engineering theories and procedures.
  • Ability to collaborate within a diverse, multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, time-management, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of multiple problem domains and ability to become knowledgeable in new domains quickly.
  • Ability to present results supporting system-level analysis, performance trade-offs, and decision-making, and to communicate technical concepts effectively to stakeholders across disciplines.
  • Flexibility to multitask and adapt to evolving priorities.
  • Ability to support on-site consistently.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience with one or more of MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or MagicDraw.
  • Experience integrating descriptive modeling tools with other simulation tools.
  • Experience with methods for analysis of alternatives under uncertainty.
  • Familiarity with space missions operating in LEO, MEO, or GEO.
  • Familiarity with GNC concepts and space sensors.
  • Knowledge or interest in Systems Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, Trade Space Exploration, Machine Learning, and Data Engineering.
  • Experience in data visualization and storyboarding.
  • Experience with SysML and implementing tools such as MagicDraw.

Responsibilities

  • Select and perform analysis approaches for problems and independently execute assignments.
  • Independently perform systems engineering lifecycle assignments, including concept and architecture design, integration, testing, and operation.
  • Drive solutions to complex problems with limited direction; contribute to task planning and test development, propose ways forward, and adapt to program requirement changes.
  • Lead small teams of fewer than five people, align team members with program goals, and build trust within the team.
  • Use analysis outcomes to provide insight and suggest design modifications, applying analysis techniques across a range of technical challenges.
  • Identify program- and system-level technical risks and develop and execute mitigation strategies.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and provide constructive feedback.
  • Collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment with stakeholders and external partners.
  • Translate requirements into technical and architectural decisions.
  • Identify and develop relevant modeling and analysis techniques, and develop or integrate multi-domain qualitative models.
  • Present results that support system-level analysis, performance trade-offs, and decision-making.
  • Communicate technical concepts effectively with customers, engineers, managers, and other stakeholders.

Benefits

  • Workplace flexibility programs.
  • Employee clubs, including photography and yoga.
  • Health and finance workshops.
  • Off-site social events.
  • Discounts to local museums and cultural activities.
