Mechanical Design Engineer II

Astro Mechanica•San Francisco, CA
•$140,000 - $170,000•Onsite

About The Position

Astro Mechanica is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer II to design hardware for Duality™, its jet engine designed for efficient operation from takeoff through supersonic flight. The role owns mechanical designs from early trade studies and prototypes through detailed design, release, flight qualification, vehicle integration, and aircraft flight. The engineer considers system-level effects and collaborates with propulsion, aircraft, and test teams, applying a test-like-you-fly approach. The position is hands-on: the engineer will assemble prototypes, develop supporting tooling and work instructions, test hardware, analyze results, verify requirements and performance, and drive corrective actions when problems arise. The role is based in an in-office work environment, with five days per week in the office considered an essential part of the position.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of hands-on mechanical design experience taking hardware from concept through build and test.
  • Proficiency in solid, surface, and sheet metal CAD modeling in a major CAD package; Siemens NX is preferred, with transition support available for candidates using CATIA, Creo, or SolidWorks.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, including machining, additive manufacturing, and sheet metal, as well as precision measurement and GD&T.
  • Working understanding of structural analysis, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Track record of designing parts that were built, tested, and improved based on test results.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where priorities change in response to test results.
  • High standards for detail and quality.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with propulsion systems such as gas turbines, rocket engines, or other turbomachinery.
  • Experience with high-temperature, high-speed rotating, or pressurized hardware.
  • Familiarity with data acquisition and instrumentation.
  • Exposure to electromechanical systems or power electronics integration.
  • Experience with flight hardware or qualification testing.

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical design of engine components and subsystems, from trade studies through detailed design and release.
  • Consider system-level impacts in design trades and collaborate with propulsion, aircraft, and test teams.
  • Complete detailed design and support structural, thermal, and fluid analyses.
  • Present design reviews and incorporate stakeholder feedback.
  • Assemble prototypes, design supporting tooling, and write work instructions.
  • Test hardware and analyze data to verify requirements and performance.
  • Diagnose hardware problems and drive corrective actions.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, including Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
  • 401(k) program and transparent stock option plan.
  • Self-managed and flexible time-off policy, including PTO, paid holidays, and sick time.
  • Flexible work environment.
  • Company-funded perks, including weekly team lunches and Astro Mechanica swag.
