About The Position

This part-time, fully remote consulting engagement is for experienced Mechanical CAD professionals contributing to an advanced AI training project focused on engineering design interpretation. The work involves analysing complex mechanical assemblies in native FreeCAD format, interpreting engineering drawings and supporting technical information, and creating precise, objective question-and-answer materials grounded in verifiable engineering data. The consultant will assess component relationships, interfaces, geometry, design intent, mechanical functions, and dimensional considerations. They will author technically specific questions and accurate answers, validate conclusions against CAD geometry and drawings, and prepare supporting documentation. The role requires strong technical judgement, attention to detail, clear communication, independent work management, and adherence to agreed timelines and quality standards. Project scope, workload, timing, and duration may change according to project requirements. Work must not use confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party.

Requirements

  • Proven background in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, industrial design, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong foundational and applied knowledge of CAD systems and engineering design principles.
  • Expertise in analysing complex mechanical assemblies and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Ability to produce clear, precise, objective technical documentation or assessment materials.
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical insights to varied audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and manage deliverables in a remote environment.
  • Commitment to technical accuracy, consistency, and objective assessment.
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to an employer, client, institution, or other third party.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with FreeCAD.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, CATIA, Autodesk Inventor, or comparable CAD platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse complex multi-part mechanical assemblies provided in native FreeCAD format.
  • Interpret component relationships, interfaces, geometry, and overall assembly design intent.
  • Review engineering drawings and supporting technical information.
  • Identify key mechanical functions, design considerations, and dimensional relationships.
  • Apply engineering judgement when evaluating assembly behaviour and technical details.
  • Develop objective, precise, non-guessable question-and-answer sets for assigned assemblies.
  • Create detailed technical questions about mechanical functions, design rationale, and dimensional considerations.
  • Ensure questions are grounded in verifiable assembly data and that answers are technically specific and unambiguous.
  • Produce accurate answers supported by source assembly data and validate conclusions against CAD geometry, drawings, and component relationships.
  • Review question-and-answer pairs for logical consistency and technical correctness, and clarify ambiguities before finalising deliverables.
  • Prepare technical documentation and supporting notes where required.
  • Communicate with project coordinators about questions, ambiguities, or technical issues; incorporate feedback and adapt deliverables to evolving standards.
  • Manage assigned work independently while meeting agreed timelines and quality expectations.
