About The Position

24-MAG LLC is recruiting experienced mechanical engineers for a part-time, fully remote independent-contractor consulting engagement supporting an advanced AI training and engineering evaluation project. Selected professionals will create, solve, review, and validate rigorous engineering tasks involving mechanical design, physical modelling, simulation, technical problem-solving, and Python-based automation. Work spans structural, thermal, mechanical, and multiphysics applications, and combines engineering judgment with computational modelling, simulation verification, and critical evaluation of solutions. The work includes translating engineering requirements into analytical or computational models; preparing geometry, meshes, materials, loads, contacts, constraints, and solver inputs; conducting and troubleshooting engineering analyses; automating computational workflows in Python; and validating outputs against hand calculations, experimental data, reference cases, or expected physical behaviour. Professionals will also review AI-generated engineering solutions, produce reproducible reference solutions and validation checks, and improve designs against objectives such as performance, mass, strength, stiffness, thermal behaviour, reliability, and manufacturability. The engagement is approximately 15 hours per week, with a flexible schedule that may include evenings or weekends. Compensation is output-based at $80–$130 per hour, with payment for tasks that meet project specifications; minimum submission requirements apply. Selected professionals should be ready to begin their first task approximately 24–48 hours after onboarding. Roles are typically filled within approximately 48 hours. Selection may include screening questions, an approximately 30-minute AI interview, and hiring-manager review. Work must not use confidential or proprietary information belonging to an employer, client, institution, research group, or other third party.

Requirements

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline; alternatively, a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with at least 1–2 years of relevant professional experience in mechanical design, analysis, simulation, testing, or R&D.
  • Strong understanding of applied mechanics and core mechanical-engineering principles.
  • Experience developing analytical, computational, or simulation-based engineering solutions.
  • Practical proficiency with Python.
  • Experience with at least one mechanical-engineering, geometry, meshing, or simulation tool that supports a command-line interface, scripting, configuration files, or a programmatic API.
  • Ability to select and justify boundary conditions, loads, material properties, physical assumptions, and model fidelity.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot simulations and distinguish numerical problems from real physical behaviour.
  • Ability to clearly explain engineering decisions, limitations, and trade-offs.
  • Experience limited exclusively to graphical-user-interface workflows is not sufficient.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with scientific Python libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, SymPy, pandas, Matplotlib, Jupyter, or comparable tools.
  • Experience with tools such as CalculiX, Gmsh, Elmer, FEniCSx, CadQuery, OpenSCAD, OpenFOAM, or comparable software.
  • A Master's or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Solve and validate mechanical-engineering problems involving design, analysis, simulation, testing, or R&D.
  • Translate physical systems and engineering requirements into analytical or computational models, selecting appropriate assumptions, model fidelity, and engineering simplifications.
  • Develop technically sound solutions across structural, thermal, mechanical, and multiphysics applications.
  • Create or modify geometry, meshes, materials, loads, contacts, constraints, and solver inputs.
  • Perform structural, thermal, dynamic, fatigue, buckling, vibration, and related analyses.
  • Select and justify loads, boundary conditions, material properties, and simulation parameters.
  • Diagnose invalid geometry, poor mesh quality, convergence failures, and incorrect boundary conditions; assess whether outputs are physically realistic and technically valid.
  • Use Python to automate model preparation, simulations, parameter sweeps, optimisation, post-processing, and verification.
  • Develop reproducible workflows using scripts, configuration files, command-line tools, or programmatic APIs, and integrate Python with CAD, meshing, finite-element, optimisation, or simulation software.
  • Analyse relevant outputs, including stress, strain, displacement, temperature, heat flow, deformation, frequency response, and safety factors.
  • Compare simulation results with hand calculations, experimental data, reference cases, or expected physical behaviour.
  • Review AI-generated engineering solutions and identify reasoning errors, incorrect assumptions, or violations of physical constraints.
  • Develop reproducible reference solutions and objective validation checks.
  • Iteratively improve designs for performance, mass, strength, stiffness, thermal behaviour, reliability, or manufacturability.
  • Explain engineering decisions, limitations, and trade-offs clearly.
  • Complete work without using confidential or proprietary third-party information.
