About The Position

Repairs and overhauls automobiles, buses, trucks, and other city heavy or light equipment by performing the following duties in shop facility or field as required.

Requirements

One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, and legal documents.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
Ability to effectively present information to top management.
Ability to calculate figures such as percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to apply principals of logical thinking to a wide range of abstract and concrete variables.
Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, site plats, graphs, etc.).
Valid CDL Class B Tennessee Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

Examines vehicle and discussed with department head or supervisor the nature and extend of damage or malfunction.
Plans work procedure.
Raises vehicle, with hydraulic jack or lift to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle.
Removes unit such as engine, transmission, or differential.
Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear.
Repairs or replaces pats as needed.
Overhauls or replaces carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.
Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panel.
Relines and adjusts brakes, repairs or replaces shock absorbers.
Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.
Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
Must be able to perform diagnostics/scanning for testing.
Familiar with hydraulic systems, repairs, and replacements.
Repair, mount, and balance all types of tires.
Basic Knowledge and operation of multiple types of equipment.
General knowledge of welding, cutting torch, plasma cutter and band saw.
Must be able to operate all equipment classified as light and heavy equipment by the Manchester Public Works Department.
Performs other duties may be assigned.
On call 24/7.
Must respond to callout with in 30-minute time frame.
