About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Public Works Director, the Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work related to the care and maintenance of heavy-duty streets and drainage equipment, public works vehicles, and public safety vehicles. This role involves performing maintenance on various heavy equipment and vehicles, maintaining a safe work area, establishing and executing a preventative maintenance program, advising the Director on expenses and equipment needs, and potentially operating machinery. The position also requires responding to emergency maintenance requests, representing the City professionally, and collaborating with other City teams. Employees are expected to perform tasks as assigned by their supervisor, and working hours may be extended as needed.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Texas Driver's License (Class B or higher) and a Safe Driving Record.
Ability to be insured.
A.S.E. Certification in heavy equipment and diesel engines.
Minimum of (2) years of mechanic experience in streets, parks, grounds, or other heavy equipment maintenance operations.
Experience with and knowledge of maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery required for work of the Public Works department, including streets, drainage, parks, and public safety vehicles, including but not limited to forklifts, loader, bobcats, excavators.
Proficiency with tools, equipment, motors, complex engines, and City vehicles.
Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and materials for municipal maintenance projects and activities.
Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques related to streets and drainage equipment maintenance.
Knowledge of safety practices pertaining to the lines of work.
Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
Ability to complete heavy equipment maintenance work orders safely, efficiently, and effectively.
Ability to follow directions of Supervisor(s).
Ability to follow safe work practices.
Ability to analyze and solve problems, evaluate alternatives and make creative recommendations; read and interpret plans and specifications and guidelines.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; represent the City professionally.
Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports and correspondence as needed.

Ability to stand, walk, sit, squat, bend, use hand and finger dexterity, and use physical strength to lift, reach, push, pull, and apply pressure.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Availability for work, reporting to work in a dependable and timely fashion, and being physically and mentally fit to do their assigned work.

Nice To Haves

Specific Mechanical certifications helpful, but not required [i.e. hydraulics, specific engine types or brands, brakes, transmissions, etc.].
Safety training certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform maintenance on all heavy equipment and vehicles in the streets, drainage, and parks operation, including public safety vehicles and large equipment like forklifts, excavators, gradalls, and bobcats.
Maintain the mechanic work area and company tools in a safe, secure, clean, and organized manner.
Establish and execute a preventative maintenance program to ensure heavy equipment and vehicles are in working condition and safe for daily use.
Maintain accurate receipts and advise the Director on expenses, capital equipment purchases, and replacement needs.
Perform other maintenance duties as assigned in the Public Works Department, including operating heavy and light machinery.
Report problems and emergency situations, recognizing, avoiding, and reporting unsafe acts to the immediate supervisor.
Respond to emergency maintenance requests during and after normal hours, and be available for emergency call-out.
Represent the City in a professional manner with the public, vendors, and agencies, handling difficult complaints and inquiries.
Work closely with other members of the Public Works department and other City teams to provide a coordinated and supportive approach to service delivery.
