About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic-Rural ARFF- Advanced Journey to assist in maintaining heavy-duty and light-duty equipment and vehicles essential for road construction, rural airport operations, and other user agency needs. This role involves resolving complex equipment issues and performing routine and specialized repairs on various heavy equipment systems, including transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, fuel injection, hydraulics, and brakes. The position is part of the State Equipment Fleet (SEF) team, contributing to the department's mission of "Keeping Alaskans Moving through Service and Infrastructure" by ensuring safe and economical vehicles for state agencies.

Requirements

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
Openness to change and new information; ability to rapidly adapt to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
Ability to set well-defined and realistic personal goals; display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; work with minimal supervision; be motivated to achieve; demonstrate responsible behavior.
Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383).
Register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties.
Provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
Proficiency in operating heavy equipment.
Must provide own hand tools.

Nice To Haves

Successful completion of ETT (Emergency Trauma Treatment) training 40-hour course.
Successful completion of ARFF training, including 40-hour course.
Successful completion of medical evaluations and fit test for self-contained breathing apparatus.
Training in Managing Wildlife Hazards at Airports.

Responsibilities

Professionally maintain all heavy-duty and light duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other user agency vehicles.
Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods.
Perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.
Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems (air and electrical) for light and heavy-duty equipment.
