About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic-Rural ARFF- Advanced Journey to help us Keep Alaska Moving! This position involves professionally maintaining all heavy-duty and light duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other user agency vehicles. The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems and perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment. This includes diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying systems such as transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems (air and electrical) for both light and heavy-duty equipment. As part of the State Equipment Fleet (SEF) team, you will contribute to the department's mission of “Keeping Alaskans Moving through Service and Infrastructure” by ensuring essential vehicles and equipment are operational.

Requirements

Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383).
Register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties.
Provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
Obtain a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
Comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures.
Pass the required Pre-Employment drug test.
Provide own hand tools.
Be free of misdemeanor crime of domestic violence conviction.
Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
Self-Management: Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.
A copy of your Class A CDL, front and back (if applicable) required at time of interview.

Steel toed boots or other approved personal protection equipment required on the job.

ETT (Emergency Trauma Treatment) training 40-hour course.
ARFF training, including 40-hour course and medical evaluation and fit test for self-contained breathing apparatus.
Training in Managing Wildlife Hazards at Airports (training provided after hire).

Responsibilities

Professionally maintain all heavy-duty and light duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other user agency vehicles being operated in the area.
Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods.
Perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.
Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission, along with fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems including air and electrical for light and heavy-duty equipment.
Operate heavy equipment.
Travel in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations.
Conduct day trips and overnight stays for travel.
