Manufacturing Tooling Engineer

Deploy•Birmingham, AL
•Onsite

About The Position

Deploy's client designs, manufactures, and constructs buildings and their components, including steel structural frames, headwalls, surgery ceilings, MEP racks, Central Energy Plants, exam rooms, bathrooms, and whole building modules. The company operates twelve production lines across five programs with more than 800 teammates. Tooling is used throughout production, from parts and subassemblies to modules, and this newly created role will own the company's tooling work. The Manufacturing Tooling Engineer takes tooling projects from design through production-floor implementation. Working with manufacturing process engineering and product design, the engineer determines how parts should be held and located, models fixtures, performs tolerance stack-ups, arranges fabrication internally or through vendors, and supports first production runs. The engineer also responds to tooling issues affecting line speed or part quality, supports tooling for both existing and future lines, and maintains tooling drawings, bills of material, revision control, asset records, and calibration and repair schedules in coordination with Maintenance. The role begins with a project brief owned by the General Manager or Chief Launch Engineer, who prioritizes competing requests. The engineer refines the brief into a problem statement and proposed solution, presents it for internal review, iterates, and builds. The position has a dedicated fabricator to start, and the engineer manages a budget for each internal tooling project. The role does not own product design, the production schedule, or Maintenance, but influences all three. It reports to the Manager of Manufacturing Engineering and is onsite in Birmingham, Alabama, with occasional travel to vendors and job sites. Relocation assistance is available.

  • Hands-on fabrication experience, including welding, metal fabrication, and basic machining.
  • Ability to manage outside vendors on cost, lead time, and quality.
  • Ability to explain the rationale for fixture design choices and alternatives rejected.
