Manufacturing/ Tooling Engineer

BLUE ORIGIN•Seattle, WA
•$112,059 - $156,883

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which supports manufacturing and supply chain across Blue Origin facilities. As a member of a small manufacturing engineering team, the Manufacturing/ Tooling Engineer designs, develops, and implements tooling, fixtures, ground support equipment (GSE), and production work centers for precision valve hardware. The role owns tooling efforts from concept through fabrication, installation, and production readiness, partnering with product-specific manufacturing engineers on commissioning and handoff to production. The engineer works closely with design engineering, manufacturing operations, supply chain, facilities teams, suppliers, and tooling fabricators to ensure production systems are safe, repeatable, and ready to build hardware at rate. The work includes tooling design and documentation, production-line and work-center setup, support for assembly and testing processes, and continuous improvement in safety, quality, cost, and delivery. Passion for Blue Origin’s mission and vision is required. The position is scheduled Monday through Friday, with travel expected up to 10% of the time. Relocation is provided. Applicants must be physically able to support production-floor activities and lift and carry 40 pounds. The base pay range for Washington applicants is $112,059.00–$156,882.60; ranges at other sites may differ. Applicants must meet the stated U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, refugee, or asylum eligibility requirements. A standard background check is required for all positions; additional checks or credentials apply to certain job profiles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant field from an accredited university.
  • At least 5 years of direct experience in tooling design, GSE development, or manufacturing engineering with a strong tooling focus.
  • Hands-on experience designing and developing tooling, fixtures, and GSE for precision mechanical assemblies, including tight-tolerance assembly, part fixturing, leak testing, and functional acceptance testing.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as Creo, NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent for detailed tooling design and drawing production.
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards, including ASME Y14.5.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage tooling projects from concept through production validation, including vendor coordination and schedule management.
  • Experience standing up or significantly contributing to production work centers, assembly lines, or manufacturing cells.
  • Strong written, verbal, and technical communication skills across all levels of an organization.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Must be physically able to support production-floor activities and lift and carry 40 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with design, manufacturing, and testing of fluid systems, valve mechanisms, or precision fluid-control hardware.
  • Experience in rate-manufacturing environments, including production-line setup, flow optimization, and capacity planning.
  • Experience designing automated manufacturing equipment, PLC controllers, or sensor integration.
  • Familiarity with pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Familiarity with modular tooling or reconfigurable-fixture concepts.
  • Experience with Windchill PLM software.
  • Knowledge of AS9100 Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Experience developing tooling requirements documents, ConOps, or similar engineering specifications.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt, 5S, Lean, or equivalent continuous-improvement experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, procure, install, and commission custom manufacturing tooling, fixtures, and GSE for precision valve assembly, leak and functional testing, and integration.
  • Lead work-center and production-line standup, including layout, flow design, capacity planning, and readiness validation.
  • Own tooling development from requirements definition and CAD design through vendor fabrication and validation for production readiness.
  • Develop and maintain tooling drawings and documentation packages to Blue Origin and ASME standards, including Y14.5 and Y14.100.
  • Conduct GD&T analysis and tolerance stack-ups to ensure tooling meets assembly and functional requirements.
  • Develop Concepts of Operations (ConOps) for new tooling, defining safe, ergonomic, and repeatable use on the factory floor.
  • Collaborate with external suppliers and tooling fabricators through design, fabrication, and acceptance.
  • Support development of manufacturing work instructions for tool use and work-center operations across assembly, test, integration, and refurbishment.
  • Design material-handling and packaging solutions to protect precision hardware throughout build and test processes.
  • Identify and implement improvements to tooling, fixturing, and production flow to improve safety, quality, cost, and delivery.
  • Support Design for Manufacturability reviews and participate in design-gated reviews to integrate tooling considerations early.
  • Manage tooling configuration and maintain pedigree throughout build and commissioning.
