Tiger Team Manufacturing Tooling Engineer

HellermannTyton North America•Milwaukee, WI

About The Position

The Tooling Engineer is the TIGER Team technical owner for mold and tooling investigations, tooling trials, and permanent tooling countermeasures. The role evaluates mold condition, component wear, hot-runner performance, venting, cooling, alignment, maintenance history, and failure mechanisms to determine whether tooling contributed to internal or external quality issues. The engineer coordinates inspections and trials, defines maintenance strategies, and verifies that tooling corrections prevent recurrence. The work supports HellermannTyton's Quality and EHS certifications and requires compliance with applicable corporate policies, procedures, work instructions, and documentation requirements. The engineer also supports urgent mold troubleshooting, containment, and safe return-to-production decisions; develops inspection criteria and troubleshooting guidance; and coordinates toolmakers and technical suppliers when needed. The position requires strong technical knowledge of injection tooling, investigation and trial planning, maintenance strategy, and cross-functional problem solving.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Tooling, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Plastics, or a related engineering discipline; equivalent advanced tooling experience may be considered.
  • At least 2 years of mold design, tool engineering, mold maintenance, injection molding, or comparable tooling experience.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing tool-related defects and implementing mechanical countermeasures.
  • Strong knowledge of injection molds, mold components, hot runners, machining, venting, cooling, fits, tolerances, and common wear and failure mechanisms.
  • Ability to interpret part and tool drawings, tolerances, dimensional results, and maintenance records.
  • Ability to plan tooling investigations and trials that isolate causes and generate objective evidence.
  • Working knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance strategy, spare-parts planning, and repair documentation.
  • Strong mechanical problem-solving, technical writing, project-management, and cross-functional communication skills.
  • Ability to move quickly on urgent quality risks while maintaining safe work practices and disciplined change control.
  • Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and adequate insurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CAD, dimensional inspection, tolerance analysis, and tool-tracking or maintenance systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and project-management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Rapidly assess tooling-related factors in prioritized customer complaints, QIPs/CS2, hold tickets, QES escalations, and recurring production issues.
  • Inspect molds, cavities, components, hot-runner systems, vents, gates, shutoffs, parting lines, slides, cooling circuits, and related tooling for abnormal conditions.
  • Review maintenance history, damage records, shot counts, prior repairs, spare-component usage, and recurring defect patterns to develop evidence-based hypotheses.
  • Coordinate mold studies, bench inspections, dimensional checks, supplier support, and production trials with Manufacturing Quality and Processing.
  • Identify wear, damage, contamination, thermal, alignment, cooling, and maintenance mechanisms that may create or allow defects.
  • Design and implement permanent tooling countermeasures, including component redesign, material or coating changes, maintenance standards, inspection triggers, and error-proofing.
  • Define risk-based preventive and predictive maintenance requirements, using event-based triggers where appropriate.
  • Verify tooling corrective-action effectiveness through controlled trials, inspection evidence, production results, and recurrence monitoring.
  • Identify and develop improvements to equipment, processes, and methods.
  • Support urgent mold troubleshooting, containment, and safe return-to-production decisions.
  • Develop standard inspection criteria, troubleshooting guides, and lessons learned for recurring tool failure modes.
  • Coordinate external toolmakers and technical suppliers when specialized support is required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
