Tooling Engineer - Aerospace Manufacturing

P3 USA•Detroit, MI
•Onsite

About The Position

The Tooling Engineer works hands-on in a fast-paced aerospace manufacturing environment, developing tooling solutions that support build and production activities. The role combines mechanical design expertise with practical manufacturing knowledge to address technical challenges and improve safety, quality, cost, and production efficiency. The first assignment is on-site in Florida. Project involvement varies according to project requirements and the employee’s professional strengths. The engineer supports tooling from initial concept through commissioning, working with manufacturing and engineering teams, suppliers, and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Aerospace Engineering, or a comparable engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • At least three years of direct manufacturing experience, ideally in a technically demanding production environment.
  • Practical experience in tooling design, fabrication, and procurement.
  • Proficiency in CAD-based mechanical design and drafting.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design and manufacturing fundamentals, including GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Ability to identify relevant load cases, create free-body diagrams, and perform basic engineering calculations for common mechanical failure modes.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and equipment, including CNC machining, manual machining, welding, sheet-metal forming, lifting and rigging, assembly, and inspection.
  • Understanding of DFM and DFA principles.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of technical challenges, and manage several priorities simultaneously.
  • Effective communication with engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and other project stakeholders.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Comfort with extensive travel, up to 100% of working time, typically Monday through Friday and generally dependent on client and project needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Creo Parametric and Windchill.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA), particularly ANSYS Workbench Static Structural.
  • Experience supporting products from development into production.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and release CAD models and engineering drawings for manufacturing tooling in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Develop solutions for assembly fixtures, material-handling equipment, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machinery.
  • Manage tooling projects throughout their lifecycle, including concept, design, vendor selection, procurement, fabrication, inspection, installation, commissioning, and proof testing.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Integration Engineering, component designers, suppliers, and other technical stakeholders.
  • Establish priorities for tooling procurement and fabrication, and communicate requirements across the project team.
  • Support repair and rework activities and develop solutions for unexpected manufacturing challenges.
  • Perform root-cause analysis for nonconformances and support corrective actions.
  • Define material-handling and packaging requirements to protect hardware during manufacturing and transportation.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) principles to improve safety, quality, cost, cycle time, reliability, and maintainability.
