Manufacturing Technician - 6 month contract

Heron Power•Scotts Valley, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Heron Power is a startup developing power electronics for the electric grid, with an initial focus on converters that connect renewables, storage, and loads to the grid. The company describes its workplace as collaborative, dynamic, and focused on first-principles engineering and solving difficult problems. This is a six-month temporary contract position. The selected candidate will be employed and paid by a staffing agency and work on-site at Heron Power in Scotts Valley, California. The Manufacturing Technician will drive engineering builds and early manufacturing scale-up of complex power electronics assemblies. Working closely with engineering, manufacturing, operations, and equipment teams, the technician will establish repeatable processes, execute and track unit builds, and support product launches throughout the engineering lifecycle. Timely technical feedback will help improve products, with particular attention to safety, quality, and reliability.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in manufacturing, fabrication, or industrial assembly, with hands-on rigging as a regular part of the job.
  • Forklift certification; onsite certification may be available for the right candidate.
  • Demonstrated overhead crane and hoist experience with loads above 500 lb.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, weldment prints, and bills of materials.
  • Confidence using hand and power tools, torque wrenches, and layout and measuring tools.
  • Ability to lift 50 lb, work from ladders, and stand for a full shift.
  • Clear communication skills and knowledge of standard crane hand signals.

Nice To Haves

  • Qualified rigger training or NCCCO rigger certification.
  • Experience with large sheet metal enclosures, switchgear, transformers, or shipping-frame builds.
  • Scissor lift or boom lift certification.
  • Welding or structural fabrication background.
  • Experience working in an environment where processes were still being developed and improving those processes.

Responsibilities

  • Rig and move large fabricated enclosures, weldments, and subassemblies using a 2-ton overhead workstation crane, chain hoists, and a mobile gantry.
  • Select, inspect, and rig lifting hardware, including web slings, shackles, eyebolts, and spreader beams; verify working load limits against load weight and sling angle before each lift.
  • Identify centers of gravity and pick points on large asymmetric assemblies, and use tag lines and a spotter to control loads.
  • Operate a sit-down counterbalance forklift to receive, stage, and position cabinet frames, panels, and hardware.
  • Build and square cabinet structures on rolling assembly fixtures by setting panels, installing turnbuckle braces, shimming, and aligning to prints.
  • Torque structural fasteners to specification, verify squareness and flatness, and document results before handing work off to the next station.
  • Perform daily pre-use inspections of slings, hooks, hoists, and forklifts, and tag out and remove damaged equipment from service.
  • Work from mechanical drawings, weldment prints, and bills of materials; redline and report errors to improve instructions.
  • Help build assembly fixtures, carts, and lift aids as the line scales.
  • Keep rigging gear staged, inspected, and organized.
