Manufacturing Process Engineer

Bauer Compressors•Norfolk, VA

About The Position

The Manufacturing Process Engineer develops, implements, documents, and continuously improves manufacturing and assembly processes, with primary responsibility for administering and developing the Dozuki digital work instruction platform. The role creates standardized visual instructions, integrates in-process data collection, and supports inspection, testing, traceability, and reporting. The engineer works across Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Quality, Electrical Engineering, Design Engineering, Business Automation, and Business Intelligence to simplify assembly, improve efficiency and consistency, and make manufacturing information more useful and accessible. The position combines office-based computer work with frequent time in manufacturing and assembly areas, regular shop floor observations, process reviews, and occasional hands-on validation. The engineer is expected to identify and investigate problems, recommend evidence-based improvements, coordinate approved changes, maintain controlled documentation, train users, and verify that changes are effective. During initial onboarding, manufacturing and assembly process changes require approval by the Director of Manufacturing Execution. Authority to implement defined lower-risk changes may be delegated based on demonstrated competence. Changes affecting product design, controlled specifications, electrical requirements, test acceptance criteria, safety, or regulatory or quality obligations require approval from the appropriate authorized functions. The role is full-time and on-site at Bauer Compressors, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, with a one-hour unpaid lunch. The work environment may include machinery, noise, moving components, and typical manufacturing conditions; required PPE and safety procedures must be followed. Physical activities include sitting, standing, walking, visual observation, computer and measurement tool use, occasional bending, reaching, kneeling, hands-on assembly or testing, and occasional lifting or carrying of materials, components, or equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Essential functions may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Understanding of manufacturing and assembly principles and ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Strong technical writing, analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and aptitude for learning manufacturing software.
  • Ability to manage priorities independently and work across engineering, quality, and production teams.
  • Accurate, thorough documentation and dependable data capture.
  • Ability to create clear, logical visual instructions from complex technical work.
  • Ability to investigate root causes, use evidence to evaluate options, and make practical recommendations.
  • Ability to engage with shop floor personnel, observe real operations, and validate documented methods.
  • Understanding of traceability, data quality, and actionable reporting.
  • Ability to help users adopt consistent and effective work methods.

Nice To Haves

  • Two to five years of relevant manufacturing or process engineering experience.
  • Experience creating standardized work instructions or digital technical documentation; Dozuki experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing, root cause analysis, process improvement, inspection, and test documentation.
  • Experience with CAD, preferably Autodesk; ERP/MES; manufacturing data systems; Domo or Power BI; and workflow automation.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, structure, maintain, and continuously improve the Dozuki platform.
  • Develop and maintain accurate, clear, revision-controlled digital instructions for assembly, manufacturing, inspection, and testing, using photographs, diagrams, and other visual aids.
  • Translate approved engineering drawings, specifications, and quality requirements into practical instructions.
  • Embed in-process measurements, inspection checkpoints, verification steps, and electronic data capture; train and support system users.
  • Observe manufacturing operations and identify inefficiencies, unnecessary steps, assembly difficulties, and opportunities for standardization.
  • Develop and recommend improvements to manufacturing methods, assembly sequences, process flow, and ease of assembly.
  • Collaborate with production personnel to validate proposed changes and assess results using observation, feedback, and available data.
  • Document approved changes and support new product introductions, equipment, and process technologies.
  • Partner with Quality to document inspection procedures, quality processes, and controlled work instructions.
  • Assist in developing test methods and reporting formats, and support reliable capture of inspection and test results.
  • Incorporate approved acceptance criteria and verification requirements; support traceability and accurate reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks, reduce manual data entry, and improve manufacturing workflows.
  • Define manufacturing data needs with Business Automation and Business Intelligence; support appropriate Dozuki and business-system integrations.
  • Help develop actionable reports and dashboards for production performance, process compliance, and quality trends.
  • Coordinate with Production, Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, and Electrical Engineering on processes and documentation.
  • Partner with Design Engineering on manufacturability and assembly challenges, and with Electrical Engineering on wiring, electrical assembly, and test documentation.
  • Ensure affected teams review relevant changes, receive clear communication, and have appropriate training.
  • Communicate progress and risks, seek stakeholder input, maintain project status visibility, and follow through on work to verified completion.
  • Follow facility safety procedures, communicate observed hazards, and evaluate safety implications of proposed changes.
