About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is hiring a third-shift Manufacturing Engineer to support its superconducting magnet production line, where advanced magnet components are fabricated, inspected, assembled, and tested. The engineer provides on-shift support across production workstations to help maintain safe, high-quality production and resolve operational issues. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 10:00 pm to 6:30 am, with a 15% differential added to base pay. The role involves hands-on production engineering, troubleshooting, workstation setup verification, nonconformance disposition, root-cause investigations, and maintaining accurate process plans and work instructions in the manufacturing execution system. The engineer coordinates across production, inspection, quality, equipment, and analysis teams; supports product configuration changes; trains technicians; documents shift handoffs; and drives improvements in throughput, turnaround time, and first-pass quality. The position requires compliance with safety regulations, company policies, and industry standards. This is a full-time, onsite role. The position pays $107,000–$160,000 per year, plus equity and benefits. The salary depends on level, location, qualifications, and experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in manufacturing or production engineering, ideally supporting complex hardware, test stands, or quality-critical production.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and technical documentation, including GD&T.
  • Sound judgment on third shift, including making real-time engineering decisions within established guardrails and knowing when to stop work and escalate.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including clear shift handoffs and documentation.
  • Experience with root-cause analysis and corrective-action processes such as RCCA or 8D, and with nonconformance management.
  • Experience with a manufacturing execution system (MES), electronic work instructions, or work orders.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting skills for electromechanical equipment, instrumentation, and data acquisition or controls systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, coordinate with fellow engineers on shift, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to type, stand, stoop, and sit for extended periods.
  • Complete required safety training, including lockout/tagout, cryogenic safety, and laser and radiation area awareness.
  • Dedication to safety when working around hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights, weekends, or on-call.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with superconducting magnets, HTS tape or cable, or cryogenic hardware.
  • Experience with welding processes such as laser or TIG, weld inspection methods such as VT, RT, or UT, or NDT certification.
  • Experience running or supporting a cryogenic test stand or high-current or high-voltage test equipment.
  • Experience with instrumentation such as voltage taps, cryogenic temperature sensors, or fiber-optic sensing, and with data acquisition and time-series tools.
  • Experience with Manufacturo, Odoo, Jira, or similar MES, quality, and ticketing systems.
  • Experience with NX or similar CAD software.
  • Proficiency in work-instruction writing, process mapping, and capacity modeling.
  • Familiarity with Python or similar tools for reviewing test data.
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly, with strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on manufacturing engineering support for production operations across fabrication, welding, inspection, instrumentation, and cryogenic testing.
  • Troubleshoot process, equipment, and quality issues, and determine when to hold or stop work to protect people and product.
  • Verify and approve workstation setups against the process plan, including hardware configuration, tooling, and torque sequences.
  • Disposition nonconformances and lead root-cause and corrective-action investigations.
  • Maintain accurate work instructions and process plans in the manufacturing execution system, including redlining steps, resolving blocked operations, and capturing lessons learned in controlled documents.
  • Coordinate with NDT, welders, technicians, controls, equipment, analysis, and quality teams to resolve issues safely and quickly.
  • Support product configuration changes, including updates to process plans, tooling, and work instructions.
  • Coordinate coverage and decisions with other third-shift engineers.
  • Maintain clear shift handoffs and documentation across all three shifts.
  • Train and support production technicians on work instructions, processes, equipment, and best practices.
  • Drive continuous improvement in throughput, turnaround time, and first-pass quality.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, company policies, and industry standards.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation with equity.
  • 13 company-wide holidays.
  • Flexible vacation days.
  • 10 sick days.
  • Generous parental leave policy.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with employer matching.
  • Professional growth opportunities.
  • Team-building activities.
