About The Position
Los Altos Town Crier seeks a Managing Editor to run daily newsroom operations. The Managing Editor assigns and shapes coverage, edits copy for publication, and works with reporters, freelancers, and other departments to produce content for the weekly newspaper, associated magazines, and digital channels.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of newsroom editing experience, preferably at a community newspaper.
- Strong command of AP style, fact-checking, and headline writing.
- Sound news judgment and a working knowledge of media law basics.
- Experience managing writers and multiple deadlines.
Nice To Haves
- Familiarity with Los Altos and the Midpeninsula.
Responsibilities
- Assign stories and supervise reporters and freelancers on deadline.
- Review, edit, and approve articles for publication, checking for accuracy, AP style, clarity, and readability.
- Write headlines, subheads, and photo captions.
- Serve as the go-to person for newsroom staff.
- Work with advertising, production, digital, and accounting staff to keep each issue on schedule.
- Approve freelance invoices and forward them to accounting.
- Coach staff and freelance writers.
- Write stories as needed.
- Coordinate with editors at other Weeklys publications.
