About The Position

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is seeking a Managing Editor for its Books & Journals division. NASW, founded in 1955, is the largest membership organization of professional social workers globally, with over 120,000 members. The organization is dedicated to enhancing professional growth, maintaining standards, and advancing sound social policies. This role is responsible for the daily management of editorial activities for NASW Press journals, books, and ancillary products, operating under general supervision.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated management and supervisory skills.
  • Substantial knowledge of book and journal publishing.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Production and financial management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Command of the English language.
  • Knowledge of editing procedures, production techniques, printing processes, graphics and design, print production, and all related publishing procedures and processes.
  • Experience in planning and budgeting.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • At least five years of related work experience.
  • Proven experience in publishing, management, or a supervisory capacity.

  • Experience with collective bargaining unit contract negotiations.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the editing and production of NASW journals, books, and other assigned products.
  • Develops production schedules and handles correspondence related to these products.
  • Works with authors and Editors-in-Chief to resolve submission and editorial issues.
  • Coordinates the design process with graphic designers for books and journals.
  • Supervises the daily work activities of assigned staff, including determining work assignments, schedules, and priorities.
  • Manages, trains, and assigns daily work activities of subordinates, and recommends personnel actions.
  • Counsels and trains employees, enforces work rules, recommends disciplinary action, approves leave and timesheets, and evaluates performance.
  • Edits assigned manuscripts for journals, books, and other NASW publications, reviewing and rewriting to meet editorial specifications.
  • Manages the preparation of the editorial department’s annual operating budget and operates within the approved budget.
  • Monitors and tracks actual performance against budget and reviews related expenses.
  • Assists in the development and is responsible for the implementation of NASW Press’s editorial and production policies, practices, and procedures, ensuring adherence and recommending changes.
  • Reviews manuscripts and proofreads page proofs, making corrections as necessary.
  • Assists with product uploads and updates to the NASW Press website.
  • Serves as a staff resource to NASW editorial boards and committees, keeping them informed on publication status.
  • Assists in scheduling and arranging board and committee meetings, and in establishing meeting agendas.
  • Coordinates the work assignments of editorial freelancers, providing instructions and checking work for quality.
  • Assists with coordinating the submission, evaluation, and/or review process of book proposals.
  • Stays informed about the latest technological developments in the publishing and printing industries.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the Press’s publishing processes and systems and recommends changes.
  • Works as part of the marketing team on marketing campaigns and works at exhibit booths at conferences.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Represents management at appropriate steps in grievance procedures.
  • May participate in contract negotiations with collective bargaining units.
  • Manages the editorial production process.
  • Manages the production schedules of assigned products.
  • Works with editorial boards and committees on related publications.
  • Works with outside vendors in the development of products.
  • Works with NASW Press staff in keeping the NASW Press website updated.
