About The Position

Uniacke Estate museum is excited to announce an opening for a maintenance worker. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a team dedicated to preserving and sharing Nova Scotia's rich cultural and natural history. The Maintenance Worker will be supported by the Nova Scotia Museum Regional Coordinator Valley Region. This position is a great fit for someone who enjoys working outdoors and in historic buildings. You will be maintaining the museum buildings, gardens, roads, trails, and grounds that help interpret the Uniacke Estate museum. You will engage with visitors and assist your co-workers with events, programs, and exhibits.

Requirements

  • Grade 10 and a minimum of two years of related experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in general carpentry, painting, building, gardens and grounds maintenance, and related equipment are required.
  • Must be interested in learning about heritage gardens and plants.
  • Must be self-directed, able to take initiative and work independently but also demonstrate teamwork and respect for the diversity of others.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Computer proficiency including the Internet, emailing, web-based applications, word processing, using forms and templates is required.
  • Must comply with site policies, procedures and safe work practices including the use of assigned personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Must have a valid Nova Scotia driver’s licence.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with the public in a historic site or park environment is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a wide range of equipment and machinery which requires specific training that the museums provide.
  • Responds to alarm calls and emergency repairs as needed.
  • Primarily focuses on groundskeeping and outdoor maintenance (preparing and painting outdoor stairs and ramps).
  • May also assist with maintenance and groundskeeping at other Nova Scotia Museum sites.
  • Engages with visitors and assists co-workers with events, programs, and exhibits.
