About The Position

Responsible for overseeing the activities of assigned maintenance staff, which may include electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and HVAC mechanics. Ensures staff has the proper equipment, materials, and training to successfully complete their job duties. This position also fulfills the daily duties of their respective trade and ensures that the needs of staff and students are addressed in a timely and courteous manner. This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", requiring employees to report to their job site during emergency situations such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school or vocational school.
  • At least five years' experience in building maintenance and repair work.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia Driver's license.
  • Ability to communicate with customers, subordinates, and supervisors.
  • Ability to be customer service oriented.
  • Ability to supervise employees.
  • General knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in general maintenance work.
  • General knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Ability to interpret technical bulletins and schematics on equipment related to assigned area.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Some knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment of standard building trades.
  • Skill in using computer and associated software for assigned area.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
  • Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Capability to estimate time and material needs.
  • Capability to determine when repair is not economically practical.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and climb a ladder.
  • Ability to perform significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending or stooping, working in confined spaces, lifting or carrying items weighing 20-50 pounds with occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds.
  • Ability to perform complex operation of gasoline, diesel, or electric-powered machinery or shop equipment, requiring the manipulation of multiple controls or fine adjustments.
  • Use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the telephone and personal contact.
