The Maintenance Mechanic I performs building, mechanical-system, plumbing, and equipment maintenance and repairs, including work on pumps, motors, valves, piping, and chemical feed systems. The role also involves excavation, basin cleaning, river-water intake maintenance, sample collection and documentation, and assessing or repairing equipment in confined spaces. Mechanics use hand and powered tools, lifting and rigging equipment, cutting and burning equipment, and atmospheric monitors. At the Netherwood and Belle Mead locations, electrical troubleshooting and repairs may be assigned. The employee may respond to chemical spills and releases and perform cleanup and decontamination while wearing chemical protective clothing and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Work can take place indoors or outdoors, in adverse weather, and around hazardous gases, liquids, and solids, including in public or remote locations, buildings, and pits. The role requires following safety procedures and using appropriate personal protective equipment. Local daily travel and occasional off-hours callouts are expected. Employees who become proficient in all aspects of the position—usually within three years—may request consideration for advancement to Maintenance Mechanic II.
