About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking a Maintenance/Construction Mechanic II with a focus on Carpentry for the Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center. This role is responsible for the repair and construction of components to maintain the facility and grounds, ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of residents and staff. The facility includes a main structure of 224,000 square feet, nine cottages, 1080 interior doors, and approximately 20 acres of grounds. The Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center is a specialized long-term care facility serving adults with chronic and complex medical conditions co-existing with neurodevelopmental or neurocognitive disorders, often related to severe and persistent mental illness or intellectual disability. These residents require 24-hour supervision, daily nursing care, and assistance with daily living activities. The facility's mission is to maintain quality of life and dignity for these adults through individualized compassionate care delivered by highly skilled staff.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be in good standing with the Health Care Personnel Registry and other licensing boards/agencies.
  • Must adhere to the facility's Vaccination Policy.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing and criminal record background checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience in general maintenance and repair work.
  • Demonstrated experience in construction, carpentry and related activities.
  • Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and construction of components necessary to keep the facility in a proper working condition.
  • Cabinet making and hanging, carpentry work, masonry work, dry-wall installation, building partitions as needed, roofing, hanging doors and windows, building picture frames and other items for the comfort and well-being of the residents at this facility.
  • General maintenance duties, as assigned.
  • Must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
