About The Position

The Mailroom Clerk performs postal duties in the mail room, applying relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in compliance with MTC and customer directives. The role processes detainee correspondence, handles departmental mail, supports mailroom recordkeeping, and helps ensure proper mail services for the facility. The position reports to the mailroom coordinator and is based at the Otero County Prison Center in Chaparral, New Mexico.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Successfully complete preservice training.
Valid driver's license in New Mexico or Texas with an acceptable driving record, unless waived by management.

One year of mailroom or related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Process incoming and outgoing detainee correspondence; prepare forms and maintain related records and files.
Sort, open, inspect, and scan detainee correspondence; maintain records and deliver detainee mail.
Serve as an authorized courier for registered, special-delivery, or other mail received for facility employees and detainees.
Sort departmental mail.
Provide information and respond to inquiries about routine mailroom procedures.
Coordinate with U.S. Postal Service personnel and private mail carriers to help ensure proper mail services for the facility.
Operate postal equipment and determine the postage needed.
Assist with forms related to detainee correspondence processing and mailroom functions.
Promote positive social skills by modeling appropriate behavior and intervening when inappropriate behavior is observed.
Maintain accountability of detainees and property and follow safety practices.
